Hello all,
I request your expert insight.
I have been using Samsung S21 Ultra for quite some time.
Like other phones now a days, my device, also, can capture a RAW image. However, problem I have is in editing that RAW file on my cellphone. As soon as do any PP, the RAW file, automatically, gets converted to a JPEG with a reduced size.
I haven't been able to find a satisfactory solution to it. Company execs have also not been able to answer it.
Your comments would be appreciated .. π

SOP for all versions of editing from a raw file, on any device. Notice I very specifically said "editing FROM a raw file". You simply cannot "edit a raw file". Raw files are uneditable and unalterable immutable files. Thaz their value to us. As a source file they remain intact and ready to be used again and again.
The raw file *should* remain stored by your device, separate from the jpeg generated by the editing process. Are you saying that the raw file disappears and has been *replaced* by the jpeg ?

Yes. In my phone, I have a setting, wherein, Pro mode captures the image in both JPEG and RAW .. However, when editing, the RAW files disappears leaving me with 2 JPEG files.
Interesting fact is that, if I revert the settings of the edited file, the image gets back to its RAW format !!

If you wish to keep a seperate raw file, then import it onto your computer. it will still be in your phone, as long as you donβt use the move function, and then you will always have the raw file somewhere safe.

My phone has an image command called "Duplicate". If you can duplicate raw files, then always duplicate before editing.

Thanks .. Will try it .. But is it normal for the device to convert a RAW into a JPEG during PP ?

I should qualify my reply with the note that I use an iPhone.

The question is, does your phone use 16 bit or 8 bit processing to edit your images? The phone won't throw away data unnecessarily, so if it's capable of using 16 bit processing it will use 100% of the raw data. My guess is that "jpg" refers only to the outputted image (8 bit data) after the processing has been completed.

Geezzzzzz .. No idea !!
Your phone probably uses 16 bit processing, so no loss of editing capability until after you export it or save it as a jpg.

Ironically, I just got a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Wednesday. Still learning this beast. I wondered about the RAW files from the camera. I took I thought a few Shots in RAW @ 12MP and @ 50MP! Is that possible? My previous phone was a Note 8. Thus far I only got normally sized JPGs. I did some checking and found this:
"1 Open the Camera app on your Samsung Galaxy S23.
2 Swipe along the shooting modes and select More.
3 Download/Open Expert RAW.
4 Tap the Settings cog.
5 Tap βSave pictures inβ and tap RAW format.
6 Take RAW photos in the Expert RAW app."
I'm trying to get RAWs again while I write to you. There seemed to be a few more weird things I had to do with the camera settings. Also downloading and connecting the s23 to my PC was different.
Update 1: Odd, all I got was 12MP JPGs of a few MBs as usual and a few large 50MP at the high resolution setting, but no RAW files still all 8-bit JPGs. All as 72ppi as well, That will change once I run them through the ACR, to 300ppi.
Update 2: I found with in the phone's camera menus that I had to shoot in Pro Mode to get RAW files. I was not surprised as that was the case with my old Note 8 as well. Now I was finally able to get a 12-bit 50MP 33MB RAW (DNG) file and a 12-bit 200MP 119MB RAW (DNG). 50MP and 200MP must be simulated interpolated "resolution". Success!
I'll report back tomorrow with a description of what I see in Ps and perhaps share an image or two after shooting something interesting.
