I don't like odd batteries. When I was using my Minox C, I had to buy a mercury battery for it. When they stopped selling them, I had to buy several button batteries and use three or four of them.

I have to replace the battery in a remote control for an outlet, and is uses a #23A 12V battery. All my other remotes use common AA and AAA. It's odd that this remote needs 12V. The 23A is less than half the size of a AAA battery, and it gets its 12V from multiple button batteries packed inside.

Typically the 23A battery is used for the radio remote controls while the AA or AAA batteries are used for the IR remote controls.

Interesting. I like the remote control outlets because I can turn things on and off from my chair.

I have my remote control outlets work with Alexa so I don't have the remote control.

Ah! I'm trying to avoid Alexa and her relatives.

Alexa is OK as well as Siri but I just got a Samsung S23 and while Google works OK I just hate the say Hey Google.

The 23A isn't an odd battery. We sell at least a dozen each week at Batteries Plus.

I'm going on 80 years old, and I think this is the first one I've seen. I bet AA and AAA outsell the 23A. If not "odd," then "uncommon." Do they make rechargeable 23A batteries?

I see that some garage door remotes use them.

I don't think that they make rechargeable for that but it's not worth to have rechargeable as the battery last a long time. If it's rechargeable you will have to charge it a lot more often.

I recently needed a replacement 23A battery for a remote for my outside Christmas lights. Since it is not readily available in my rural area, I went online and the shipping cost was escessive. On the plus side, The one relaced had worked for several years.

Fortunately, the remote for my ceiling fan uses AAA.

I think I read that there are multiple button batteries inside those 23A. I wonder if you could use those instead. When mercury batteries were no longer available, I got a "holder" for button batteries for my Minox C.

EDITED: Look at this! The 23A has many aliases. Why?!

Other names for this battery type:
8LR932, A23, 23A, 23GA, A23GA, BOGP23.TS, CN23A, E23A, EL12, EXC-23BP, GP-23A, GP-23GA, L1028, LR23A, MN21, MN23, MS21, V23, VR22, WCLR23A, GP23AE, 21/23 23GA, 8LR50, 1811A, 3LR50, A23BP, AG23, GP23A, AWI L01, LRV08PA, R23A, VA23GA, V23GA, 23AE, LRVO8, LRV08, 8F10R, 8LR32, A21 21A, BAT012, LRV08, N21, PX32A, PX32AB, PX32B, RV08, RVO8, S21, GP23, 21/23, 8LR23, CA20, MN21/23, 23AE, MN23AE, A23S, P23GA

Yes - button batteries - A23 batteries are constructed of eight individual LR932 alkaline button cells enclosed in a wrapper.

You can get battery that is exactly the same size as the mercury battery and it would fit exactly and works fine (except that some camera meters would be wrong).

Order it on Amazon. Our garage door remotes use that one. They last a LONG time.
