I usually do not process or keep "portrait" type images, but occasionally if I have only one flawed, but maybe salvageable image of a species, I might try to make the save. This is one of those. This is a Great Tinamou, a large, but very secretive bird of Central America rainforests. They have been hunted for a long time and have become very wary in most places. You often hear them at dawn, before the sun rises, but you do not see them often. I saw this one only briefly and had only a fleeting moment to shoot. I was using way too lens (840 mm) and was hand holding so the shot was marginal. Instead of trashing it, I cropped down to the following head shot. Shot with Canon R5, 600 mm f/4.0 + 1.4x extender, handheld at f/5.6, SS 1/320. ISO 10,000. Processed in PS after conversion in DXO Pure Raw 3, and passed through Topaz De Noise prior to conversion to JPEG.

Your call. I think it is plenty good enough to call a keeper. Especially if don't think you will get a better one.

Same comment: you're call. The feather details on the body (lower right) seem slightly better than the eye, suggesting the plane of focus was slightly closer than the bird's eye. If your only pic of this bird ever, I guess "maybe". Personally, I'd want a better focus on the eye. And, I'd crop tighter, removing more of the open space above and on our left of the bird's head.

But, when I look at the 1:1 details, I'd only keep the better images with better (perfect) focus on the eye. Even the thumbnail seems a bit soft, before opening the attachment. I now have 100,000+ images in my LR catalog checking this morning. I only keep the best, and don't worry about / keep the 2nd or 3rd bests ....

Wow, first impressed the 600mm hand held, second that is ISO 10,000! I certainly would keep it!!! I have the same set up and would be very happy with this!

If I have only one photo of X without the probability of getting another, I keep it, regardless of IQ. In this case there is absolutely nothing wrong with the IQ! 1:1 pixel peeping or not! Keep it!

I would have kept it, too. Your focus seems to have landed on the neck area but sometimes we don't get what we want and we only get one chance.

You're only as good as the worst image you share publicly.

Considering the circumstances, this is an excellent result. As rare as the bird is, I would keep.

Excellent portrait of a fairly unhandsome bird!
