Flare

One of the things that drives me crazy about my smartphone camera is that it flares if there's even the tiniest light source in the frame. That has ruined many an image I wanted to capture and prevented me from capturing many others. The flare is usually an ugly not-quite-horizontal thing. But there are times that I like the flare.

I've recently noticed in movies (The big screen type, not home ones).

Now that's just downright interesting. Yes, there are times when the unacceptable is acceptable.

I also think it looks good here.
I see flare in tv commercials all the time and I am convinced it’s totally intentional.
I’ve even seen it in an animated cartoon!

Flare can definitely be used artistically. For that, I think the quality of the flare matters. Usually, the quality of my smartphone flare is terrible, whereas the flare from some of my better lenses is much more interesting. For example, I really like the flare in these two photos from the annular eclipse this year. But alas, some of my best lenses hardly flare at all. And as with the original post, even "ugly" flarers sometimes produce beautiful results.
