Thank you very much Longshadow. That was exactly my thought when I saw them growing. I wonder if early American settlers used the beginnings of these to build log cabins back in the opening of the West?

Perhaps when John Lloyd Wright invented them, the commercial version, in 1916 he came up with the idea after seeing the originals growing on the Idaho prairie. Of course we will never know for sure.

There is an oddly pleasant interest with a symbolic anonymity of these poles. Maybe Prairie Whac-a-mole?
