Gmail - Doing a Search

Here's an odd one. I did a search on Gmail for an email a friend said he sent me. Searching the Inbox showed me six emails from over a year ago. I can click on them and read them. Clicking on Trash showed six emails from this year. I have 4,500 emails in trash, but only going back to August of this year. How can I read emails from over a year ago? Is Gmail storing them somewhere?

Got it! I clicked on "All Mail" in the left column, and I had 2,675 emails with several from 2018 and 2019. I deleted most of the files from "All Mail," and they went into "Trash," for a total of 7,139 there. I deleted all of them. My storage with Google has dropped from 4.78GB to 3.94 out of 15GB available.

Hijacking the topic a bit, but my wife's Gmail/Google storage recently increased from 15GB to 20GB. Mine is still at 15GB. (She has always been closer to the limit than me, but other than that) I have idea why. Neither of us are paying Google. Has anyone else noticed this?

Unlike Outlook, gmail hides the trash and spam folders. But you can bring them up to view. I make it a habit to periodically visit these two folders and send the contents into never never land.

I've always been able to see my Spam folder.

In settings/labels, you can set Spam to "show if unread", then it will show up if something goes into it.

That works for a lot of other folders, but not for Trash. Trash is either show or don't.

I do not need to see old spam or junk emails so I emptry those folders after I review them. The only reason I review is in case something important might (slim chance of that) go into spam or junk. I also empty the treash folder before closing out of email.

Understand, but a local mail client solves lots of problems (such as having to manually erase 50,000 messages, a hundred at a time) and gives you unlimited history, storage, control and search capability.

You are paying Google...with your data.

Right, but the point is: Her storage limit increased and mine didn't.

Has anyone else noticed their limit going up from 15GB (without paying real money to google)?

She certainly does more shopping than I do, maybe they decided her data is worth more.

Depends on how close you are to the mailbox limit and what account you have.. Some people got upgraded from 15GB to 20GB after hitting 12GB in use...They had a legacy account...

Thanks, That would explain it. I am only at 10.5 GB. I guess I need to stuff my mailbox for a while!
