Help with dark table

I’m just starting my photography journey and trying to learn the ropes. Not paying monthly for Lightroom, so hard of Darktable, a free open source processing program, very similar to Lightroom. I’ve been spending hours trying to learn how to process my images, yet now the images look nice in the lighttable tab, but when I bring them to the darkroom to practice the editing, they all suddenly have these blocks that look corrupted or something, messing up the images. It worked fine last night but now it’s doing this. If anyone knows what I’m doing wrong please 🙏 come in and help this novice figure out what he is doing wrong. I’m trying to learn how to use this darktable from various YouTube videos. None on YouTube seems to cover this problem anywhere. Can some helpful hogger be helpful here???

Assuming that the software hasn't been corrupted it could be that your computer isn't sufficiently powerful for doing the type of editing that you're doing, and it's possible that resource-wise, Darktable is more demanding than other editors.

Do yourself a favor and invest in Photoshop Elements. For about $100 or less you will have a tool that is easy to use and learn. It will serve you well for many years.

rmbennett30!

I have been following your posts. Of all the free alternative editing software programs out there, Dark Table is good but not necessarily the easiest to learn. Recently I bought the latest version of Photoshop Elements 2024 via "Black Friday" sales for only $59.99 plus tax through Amazon. With the latest versions of the last few years, Adobe has offered only the box with the download link and activation code. This version as well as the last few offers 3 editing "Views:" Quick, Guided and Expert which will assist you with editing regardless if you're a new, an intermediate or an expert user!

There will be more sales this holiday season so PSE can be picked up for a lot less than $100!

If you don't want to spring for the cost of PSE, Fastone Image Viewer, despite its name offers all the editing basics and more that a newbie might need. I use it often to do "quick and dirty" editing.

Be well! Ed

I like DarkTable, but it is not easy to use. I have Elements, and I like that a lot. Elements when it is on sale is a good buy.

The photo you posted kinda looks like file corruption. Was the memory card properly formatted? What happens if you view the file in Windows outside of Darktable? What happens in Darktable if you use another memory card in your camera? What happens in Darktable if you use a photo from your phone or another camera?
