I try to avoid buying "Dummies" and "Idiots" books - just on principal. I would never check one out in person in a store.

I put on my Groucho Marx glasses/nose/mustache mask when checking out books like this....

Max - The information contained in Perry's or Hogan's ebook is likely better than what can be found in a traditional bound version. That is the key.

Would you be comfortable buying an ebook, printing it out with double sided pages and then having it spiral bound into a book? If you dont have the capacity to do the printing, a local shop could. The same folks could handle the binding.

I looked into this a few years ago for printing a manual. OfficeMax (?) quoted over 150 dollars, no sale.

I haven't read the entire thread but when I got my Z8's I found Hudson Henry's video's on YouTube most helpful. He goes into great detail about the Z9, which is essentially a z8 on steroids. Most of the controls are exactly the same and when they are not, he lets you know. I got my Z8's immediately when they became available, since that time Henry has released Videos about the Z8 exclusively. I am waiting until Bob Busch's book on the Z8 is released, sometime in the Spring. I found he is quite thorough in his presentation and explanations of the various functions of the camera.

1. XQD cards are a "pre-standard" implementation of what became CFE Type B. Sort of a prototype, developed mostly by Sony and Nikon. The surviving market for them is in some non-Nikon cameras and some medical and scientific instrumentation. They will probably always be more expensive, even though less capable. Since you are not using video, the XQD cards would work fine, if you happen to find a great deal on them somewhere. Otherwise, I'd target CFE-B.
2. This was answered above. The two types of cards are physically different.
3. I do not compress my raw files (D850...haven't bought my Z8 yet), but find that 100 files/GB is a good way to make a safe, quick estimate.
4. Similarity of this camera to other Nikon cameras varies. I'm working to get one because it is fairly similar to my D850 and D500. It is less similar to the D750. If you really refuse to download and scan your way through the manual, I suggest sitting down and scrolling (actively) through the menus. Use the "?" button to learn about stuff. Paul and I disagree on a number of things, but he is absolutely correct about this one.

Max--I was reading back through this discussion and noticed a big error in my post. 100 exposures per GB is not correct. The correct number is 10 exposures/GB for uncompressed raw files. (And it might be closer to 11.) We have a failing keyboard on our computer. It sometimes fails to capture keystrokes and sometimes bounces. A new one is on order. Sorry for the error.

Thank you for the correction. That makes more sense.

Do you mean David ( not Bob) Bush's book?

This is the book that I would buy, but it is not due out until summer time next year.

From Z8 online User Manual: Just a click away. More information than you can imagine.
(Divide by 660 to get the # files per GB).

Thanks. I wanted to avoid that.

I don't understand this response. This is the way manuals are provided these days for virtually all products. It is, in PDF format, what would have been provided in the past as a printed manual with the advantage of being searchable. If you'd rather have someone explain things to you try youtube; I frequently use it myself. Enjoy your Z8, it's a great camera (& video recorder).

P.S.
I'd recommend the CFExpress card, it's the newer technology.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your opinion. What I meant was that I really don't want to download a thousand page PDF and have to deal with it on the screen. I'd rather have a book that I can carry around and leaf through to the pages I want to see. For me that's easier then maneuvering through screens.

If I was the owner of a Z8 my first step in learning the camera would be to download the Nikon guide for it. If a wildlife or action photographer there is no way I will miss Steve Perry's instructions on how to use the Nikon AF.
Rick is right, there are very good books available to learn the Z8 but that means extra money you have to pay. YouTube has plenty of videos from well known photographers talking about the camera. Google also offers lots of information.

In my case I never needed to buy a book to learn a camera I owned. The guide supplied by the manufacturer and my use of videos in YouTube have always been enough but that is me.

Nothing wrong with your approach but it’s not the only good approach and I understand the value that can be had from a 3rd party guide. Yes, it’s more money, but if you spent almost $4000 for a new camera another 1% for a guide doesn’t seem like a big deal.

I thought about that. I could do that in monochrome, but not color. I'll explore. Thanks

I dunno about the Steve Perry guide, but Thom Hogan’s for the Z9 is about 1200 pages.

I actually don’t like most of the stuff I’ve seen by this guy, Rob Trek.
