Once again, I apologize for miscalculating the number of posts in this set; FIVE, not four.
Most of the chapels have these ancient frescoes, quite a few of them about a thousand years old. Unfortunately, note the graffiti at the right.
Even though they are not completely protected by walls, they are still in pretty good shape.
This one is obviously still in use, but the icons have quite literally been de-faced.
Look at those colors!
Some more defacing, but still quite beautiful.
Look at how perfect those archways are, all done with only the most basic of hand tools, and lots of love.
A detail of the figure at the right of the previous photo.
All those scratches in this, and so many of the other frescoes, only proves that those who lived some time ago had no more appreciation for art, and were no better, than we are today.

Thanks for posting very interesting images. With regard to the "scratches", the first thought that enters my mind is...WHY??

I guess it was because they could. Even back when. There are for more sets in this series. Please check them out.

and what a sorry reason. Senseless destruction of property, no matter who owns it or how old is infuriating.

Same comments as I made in the 3 previous sets Mel.
Well, Brian, then I have the same gratitude right here.

And once again, I am in awe of the perfection in their work and in their art. Some of the artwork looks like they had a pattern to go by. Could be that they actually made their own patterns. They were very talented.

They sort of had iconic images that they used. A perfect example of that would be halos around saints' heads. And they all used the same ones, with different artists having different levels of skills.
Lovely set. These places are so wonderful to visit and to ponder the abilities of those who constructed them!
