I must have changed a setting and don't know how to fix it. I have to get much further back, from the subject to get the whole thing, then I used to. Any suggestions? Thank you. Earl

We will need much more information than you have provided. What lens? Post a photo with exif.

Check in the Shooting menu for an option called Choose Image Area. Make sure you haven't selected 1.3X, which crops your DX image as you describe.

It is doing the same on two different lenses. A Nikon DX VR 55 -200 and the other one 55-300. I have to get further away from the subject, to get the whole width in, than I used to. A friend recommended finding the image area from the menu, but this camera does not have that option.

To make sure you're using the entire sensor, check to see if your images are 6000x4000. Post a picture and click on "store original" so we can see this information.

This is an example of me having to move further back to take the pictures. I do the church directory and take these pictures every Sunday.

Did you pick the wrong lens? I see other posts in your history where you shot with an 18-55mm DX lens. This example shows a 55-200mm lens, at the full 24MP resolution of this camera. At the shortest end of the zoom, you're at the maximum zoom of the other 18-55 lens.

Consider your exposure settings too. This example shows a wide array of AF points, but at f/4, only the young girl's eye is in sharp focus. A smaller aperture, say around f/8 will likely give the entire family in sharp focus. Your slow 1/60 sec shutter speed also asks everyone to be quite still, where maybe 1/100 sec would be a better choice.

The image you posted is 6000x4000px, this is the max (L) pixel image area of your D5300. It was taken with a 55-200mm lens at 60mm.

From the above it suggests all is normal with respect to subject distances.

when all else fails, go back to the beginning. Look for the two green dots next to buttons. Press and hold those buttons at the same time. Camera will blink and then its back to the factory settings. I have a 5200 and there is a green dot on each side of the eye piece . click those buttons, they may be different place on the 5300.

I have not read anything in this discussion that suggests the need to reset the camera. And if he does do a reset, and if it should miraculously fix the problem, the OP will not have any clue of what went wrong or how to prevent it from happening again.

Right. 60mm on a crop sensor Nikon is equivalent to a 90mm lens on a full frame camera, appropriate for taking portraits. The distance to your subject is appropriate and correct, though it was pointed out that some tweaking of the focus and shutter speed may have made the photo better.

I'm absolutely amazed that there are those around who do not consider the absolute simple basics of investigating problems before suggesting such possible drastic and time wasting procedures.
