Apples’ Photos Question

I realize this will be reviewed by a very small subset of hoggers. However, be that as it may, I use Apples Photos to edit my pics. Not the best in the world, but it works for me. Recently returned from Uganda, with about 25,000 photos. I was about half way through when Sonoma was released. I always do the updates, and after the update, Photos was different.

The biggest problem is after editing a photo, copying the edits, and pasting to them the next photo, which was taken a fraction of a second later, the new system makes its own edits. It WILL NOT COPY my edits. I’ve been on the phone with Apple for over 4 hours this week, and basically they are taking notes. The advisor admits something is wrong, and it’s going to the “Engineers”.

Just wondering if any of you have had issues with Sonoma and Photos.

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks for the heads-up. Still on Ventura so will delay the update to Sonoma since I periodically use Photos.

25,000 photos is definitely too many!

I was very unhappy with Sonoma and had previously posted about it on Nov 15th:

I have a Mac Mini M2-Pro (16GB RAM) with the latest Ventura OS 13.6.1
I purposely waited for a second release of the Sonoma OS before attempting to upgrade. The Sonoma OS was very problematic; system was slow, most apps unresponsive or crashing, etc. . . Fortunately, I use Time Machine backup every week and keep all photos and documents on external drives, but the Sonoma OS would not let me restore to Ventura. I had wanted to do a clean install anyway (just got the new Mac Mini this past August), so I did that and re-loaded only the software that I use. It's a bit puzzling because I know others on this site have upgraded to Sonoma without any problems. Meanwhile, I did send a report to Apple and will stick with Ventura 13.6.1

Any chance to restore the system from a previous backup?
I had issues a few weeks ago with a new MacBook Pro. I wiped it clean and reinstalled my last backup which I did before I bought the new one.

Yes, That is an option. But I finished editing my Uganda photos, so only miscellaneous for the next several months. I’m going to give Apple some time to fix the mess they created before going backwards.

Thanks,
‘Mike

By all means, if they think it's an issue they can fix, I would stick with that plan.

Regret I cant assist with your problem Mike, but 25,000 photos? How long were you in the country I wonder? Thats more photos than I would take in a year, or two .
Hope someone gives you the answer you want.

If one goes on a once in a lifetime trip (ie. expensive!), why not take 25,000 photos? Memory is cheap. I take photos and video and just came back with 2 TB of photos/video from my trip to Africa.

Hi, I have been using Mac's since the Apple II
Generally speaking installing Apple's Updates if your machine is compatible is a good idea, as it updates to the latest security features etc, BUT it is Always a good Idea to wait for the x.1 or x.2 updates because there are inevitably a couple of hundred small bugs that need to be fixed and sometimes as you have experienced bigger bugs.
And it sounds like you may have been the first to report it.
The second thing is that before installing ANY OS update, it is a best practice to clean out your Mac of as much junk as possible, uninstall any unused , unwanted or out of date applications then launch Disk first aid from your recovery drive (so it can unmount the boot drive for examination/ repair.
Because it is POSSIBLE though not probable that something on your machine is acting badly with SONOMA (Apple usually does a good job of sequestering incompatible Applications)
Also if you were in the middle of importing 25k photos , allowing that to finish before updating is better procedure.
Also I generally unplug my Time machine drive when doing an update, so that should the update cause a problem
You can restore the old OS from Time machine.

I realize this is not what you wanted to hear, but it is important and lead to a potential fix.

Assuming you have an up to date time machine backup, you can launch time machine, and go back in time to before the update. You should be able to restore your machine to it's previous state from there. Another think I have done is to restore to an external SSD ( a spinning drive is probably too slow for a boot drive)
You can then change the startup disk to the external and use the machine that way until the bug is fixed.
Another way to do it is an Option Boot (Shut Down, then start up while holding the Option Key, it will show all available Boot drives)
Good luck

3 weeks. How many photos at 10 frames per second would you take if you were sitting in the middle of a family of Silverback Mountain Gorillas? A troop of 30 chimpanzees? 250 species of birds you’ve never seen? And you’re not going back? Easy to shoot 25,000, and after editing them, I’m glad I did.

MJ, me since 1988 with the Apple 2GS, the speed demon of the time. I had already imported all my photos, and was more than halfway done editing them. I have since finished, and in regular contact with a senior advisor in the Media group. Others have reported issues with Photos since the update, but I couldn’t find anyone discussing my issue. Waiting for the “Engineers” report.

Thanks,

Mike

I assume your answer was directed to me

That's an easy question. None. I occasionally bracket 3 photos, but have never even considered taking photos at 10 fps. I am a photographer not a machine gunning operator who is trying to fluke that 'amazing' shot.
Not one ounce of satisfaction in that approach for me, but each to their own.
