Hi Everyone,
I am going on a European cruise mid 2024 and would love your opinions about what to take with me. I want only one lens and body. Here's what I have...

Nikon D700 and D7000

Lenses:
* Tokina 100 2.8
* Nikon 35-70 1.28D
* Tokina 17-35 F4 FX
* Nikon 50 1.8D
* Nikon 18-105 kit
* Tamron 70-300

If I were to take one body and one lens, what would be your choices and why?

Thank you
Joel

It really depends on your photography style, and what you <like to> shoot.

I like to travel light. Given your list, I'd take the body you feel more comfortable using and the 18-105. Add the 50 if there is room.

When I went to Iceland I took an 18-200 and a 50. I only used the 50 for the Northern Lights.

18-105 cover the broadest range and will probably satisfy all of your travel needs except for wildlife and macro work.

Thank you both for your replies. I guess the main shooting will be scenery, both in the streets and landscape. Since the 18-105 is DX, I would use it with the 7000

To quote a wise man: It really depends on your photography style, and what you <like to> shoot.

This is a difficult question to answer Joel, if for no other reason than the answer is specific to you but here are my two cents.

My goto cameras are very similar to yours. A D7100 and a D750 but that is where the similarities stop. My first question is a two-parter. Do you have any mobility issues, and could weight be a problem?

Speaking for me, I do, and it could but it didn't stop me from upgrading my lenses to much heavier things with better IQ so if weight isn't an issue, take the D700.

Some time ago I took a look through the archives and determined that many of my shots fell in the 24-70mm range so in spite of thrashed knees, I bought a 24-70mm f2.8 so to answer your question, balance focal length against image quality. You have some nice lenses so I don't think that any one of them would be an issue but if you only want to take one, then you might want to take the one with the best reach.  It's always a crap shoot. lol

Thank you. I have to say that after a few hours of shooting grandkids sports, the D700 and 70-300 do get really heavy for me ( being 70 ).

I think for travel pics, the 18-105 would be fine. When I shoot models portraits, I use the D700 on a tripod...so yes, weight is a factor..no mobility issues

I think that the D7000 with the 18-105 would work dandy.

As noted, you haven't really told us what you are interested in shooting. 35 years ago, my wife and I spent two weeks in Germany and Austria. I had an Olympus OM-2n and a Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 and did great with it. Last year, I attended a railroad convention with a 24-120mm f/4 zoom and a full frame and a DX body and proved that each combination worked great.

My first choice from your list would be the D7000 and the 18-105mm zoom. My second choice would be the D700 and the 50mm f/1.8. But I'd also experiment to see if I could do something unconventional...like using the 18-105 to shoot square format on the D700.

Consider a "travel camera" like a Sony RX100iv.

I would bet money that you could make any of the three options that I suggested work just fine, without even breathing hard.
