Going longer when shooting with my D850 I use 2 lenses. Hand holding I use the Nikkor AF-s 500mm F/5.6.
On a tripod I use the Nikkor AF-s 800mm F/5.6.
For longer walks the Nikkor 300mm PF is a really nice light weight.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving and go shoot a turkey ... with a lens.

The Sigma 50-600 may be something for you to look at - it IS heavy tho ....SORRY, the 60-600 is only for mirror less - so try the Sigma 50-500 instead. WAIT, there is an older F-mount version 60-600 - I am NOT dreaming ! ?
I also have a 28-300 on my D750. Works fine but I wanted a little more reach as well but didn't want to go for the weight and expense of a prime 500mm. I found a used Sigma 150-500 and, so far, it's working out fine. Going to give it a real test in a couple of months.
I also own a 20-300

The Nikon 28-300 is an excellent walkaround lens. It is a variable aperture lens (f3.5-5.6) and as such you need to know where it will perform at its best. I would say f8 and f11 are your best apertures for this lens. I do not use one have never used it before but based on my experience with similar lenses I can assure you that if you do your part the lens will do its part.
My retired ophthalmologist travels regularly to Africa with is D750 and this lens although he has rented a 600mm lens in the past but for a majority of shots he has used the 28-300 and his images look fine to me. Now he is using a Z8 with the Z 160-600 lens and he could not be happier.
Let me remind you that the longer the lens the easier it is to get blurred images.
Given your apparent preference for zooms, take a look at the 200-500.

Yep, i have lots of those big turkeys that come in daily to our fish pond to drink....theve never eaten a fish!!
I’ve always been happy with my AF-D 80-400 f4.5-5.6, nobody ever talks about this lens, unless it’s to bad mouth it. The newer AF-S is an improvement, but for the money, on my D300S it is terrific. Not for sports or BIF, slow, but I’m happy

the 200-500 I found to be a food lens for the D850 and D500.

For my D850 and lenses longer than 200mm, I use my Nikon 300mm f4 pf and my Nikon 500mm f5.6 pf lens. Both are very sharp and I usually shoot them at wide open apertures.
For any lens you are considering make sure you know what it weighs and what its minimum focus distance is as both can have an impact on how you will use this lens.

I use the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR with the D850. My D850 bag includes the trifecta: 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, and the 200-500 (also have the three teleconvertors). Going to be selling them all off as I have switced to a Z9.
the 28 300 is notoriously soft and with the D850 Nikon bodies, invest in something worthy of that body...
I personally prefer primes, the 300 f4 and/or 20-120 f4 lens would work much better - good luck
