Ocean County Library at Night

I took a regular photo of the sidewalk sculptures outside our library at night. Then I thought it might look better if it were more stylized. Especially the building with its lines looked like it could stand more contrast. I also did not like the look of the windows above the library entrance. They seemed a bit "muddy". So I looked for some filters in PS that would help eliminate the muddiness.

Sorry I have been pretty much absent lately. In November I do a special project as an extra-curricular activity. There is a website called Nanowrimo.org. It is an acronym (national Novel Writing Month) The students have to write an original story of at least 50000 words and they have to get it done in a month. It has nothing to do with what I teach (German); but it is a very good exercise to see if you can set a hard goal, work within a strict deadline and finish your goal. Most students don't even bother; but every year I can convince a few of my students to try it. You have to write 1667 words a day for an entire month if you want to finish on time. If students start the project, I start it as well and they can judge how well they are doing by how many words I have for my story. This year I think two of my students are going to complete the goal. They have about 30000 words as we speak. Of course if I'm doing this project along with my students, I don't have much time in Nov. for Hedgehoging. I promise that, when I get to 50000 words, I'll look at all your wonderful photos.

1. Muddy version. I don't like the glass section above the door.

Certainly his approach, Analysis and planned modification is the correct way to go, we should all follow that rational approach to photography.

Interesting geometric photo and well planned and executed editing.

Great Idea..."Students and "original story of at least 50000 words", that is about half of the words in many popular 250 page novels. I taught HS Math and Science after retiring from industry. Told the girls to record their conversations each weekend about 10,000 words... then in 10 years write an nostalgia novel like many that have been made into movies. People in their late 20, early 30s, will look back and feel as tho they were there in that novel.

It appears that you've eliminated most of the middle gray tones, adding contrast and sharpness to the lines. The result is fascinating! You have great depth and angles and lines. The sculptures on the walkway appear to be anti-geometry, anti-establishment beings breaking through the rigidity of cubes into shapes that are about to soar free. Do I love this? Oh yes, yes I do!!

Wow! extremely well done! The actual sculptures are stunning. I like the first image heaps better. perhaps because of the brightness of them. The glass above the door works for me also. Kind of like the "dot" above an i.

I don't see the muddiness Erich but I like the second version best.

Thank you for your input and it was interesting reading about your experiments with conversations. Good idea.

Very good point about the "beings" on the sidewalk. THey might be "anti-geometry"; but there is a symmetry. Two are leaning right and two are leaning left. I did not think "anti-establishment"; but going back to my own high school days, anti-establishment is definitely something I can sink my teeth into. Great interpretation. Thanks for the input.

I get it. The door is hard to see. It is an entrance beyond where the two farthest sculptures are. Thank you for taking the time to look and comment. Much appreciated.

See, we saw that differently. I did not like the muddiness of the original. But, I'm glad that I have both versions. People do change their minds. Thank you for your comments.

Poorly explained, I guess. What I was referring to is the grey tones that are absent in the second version. Thanks for taking a look.

Good idea to shoot this at night. Though the second one has more contrast, I prefer the first one. i think because it is a bit less abstract. In addition, I like the light coming out from the windows over the door.
