I had not bought any house paint in quite some time. Wow! I needed a good quality exterior latex. I settled for paint one step below this one, but the price was still $70/gallon retail.
No wonder painters charge so much
They'd better have real emeralds in there! 😱

Very true. I experienced the same when I accompanied my son to the paint store to purchase some paint for his new home.
I couldn’t believe what even a basic white ceiling paint cost!
The ONLY thing that matches the cost of inflation, and used in govt statistics to prove that things aren't too bad, is the cost of the standard items in their bag of groceries - EVERYTHING ELSE has gone up much more.

I worked at a Sherwin-Williams plant for a short while years ago. At that time, I was told making paint was the same as printing money. On the other hand, painters used Sherwin-Williams Duration paint on my house, and I can’t believe how well it’s held up!
Bill
It better jump out of the can and onto the walls for that price! 😂😂
Don
$102 for a gallon of paint does not seem so bad when compared to what a gallon of printer ink would cost for the number of cartridges it would take to make a gallon for your desktop printer. Oh my..!
You must be talking about seriously premium paint here. $102 USD is something like $170 in NZ and a gallon of paint is approx 4 and a bit litres. You can get most paint here in a 10L pail for that price.
Thats not the only thing that has gone up in price. Our local car dealer went from $110/hr shop rate to $250 hr! Their repair bays are EMPTY!
I painted my house eves with Dunn Edwards paint in 2003 and they just now need repainting. I would say 20 years was a good run for paint.
Maybe wallpaper will make a come back.

I've used Valspar exterior for years with excellent results. Lately, they are owned by SW, and in spite of some people finding Valspar to have changed for the worse, I did my exterior with it last fall, and found it to be very good in coverage and how easy it is to work with. I suspect the formula isn't that different. The better grade exterior (now called Duramax) can be had for around $55/gallon at Do It Best hardware stores and Lowe's. Coupon sales happen periodically, so with a rebate you can often do better.
By the way, I'd ignore the "primer" part of the new paints, especially on old siding and weathered spots, for which I'd suggest a good oil base primer.
