Here are a few skimmer dragonflies known as setwings. They are a neotropical species found in Central America and the United States where their range is expanding northward even into Ohio and Virginia. Most dragonflies when perched will hold their wings perpendicular to their body but setwings will hold their wings down and forward most of the time. Many males will perch low to the water and scan an area for prey or mates. There are 7 species of setwings with three commomly seen here in the US. All these were shot on my recent Texas trip near Austin. I hope you enjoy these beautiful creatures.

Beautiful set Doc. Are you still using your 300 with extension tubes?

I appreciate your very generous comments Mike. It was a fun survey with some old dragon hunting buddies. Only ended up with a few cactus pickers to go with my 140 shots for the day!

Much appreciated Jack. Thanks for looking in. Yes it’s what I have found works best for me with 32mm of tubes. I usually have my Tammy 18-400 along if I’m in an aquatic area without my waders and they’re just out of range of the 300 without the tubes.

Thank you Ken. I appreciate you looking in and your fine comments on my work. I’d love to get back down to your area of the country because I’m sure there’s a few dragons I’ve not had the pleasure of meeting!
