You mentioned that you were cycling, and you were shooting with a 500mm lens. How do you carry your gear? I just purchased an e-bike and love it. Just trying to figure out the safest manner of carrying my equipment.
In cycling around Sea Pines you encounter many different gators. They hang out on the banks of the various streams and ponds getting rays.
This set shows my encounters on various rides throughout the area. I enjoy the fact that the biggest gators I see are in a stream behind the athletic fields for Hilton Head Prep. I assume they do not try to retrieve lost balls. (In fact, some years ago I posted a picture of a gator in this area with a soccer balls in its mouth).
Comments and suggestions are welcome.

What an amazing bike ride Mike Thanks for sharing 👍
Nice shots ! I spend a lot of time in Florida and see a lot of gators. They rarely bother people. Most of the lakes have plenty of gators and people swim and water ski around them with no problem. They make me nervous though.
Thanks, this bunch has a relatively good record, but I do not near them.

Thanks, Lee, I cheat because I rent and own three-wheel cycles with baskets in front and in back.
