My late father was in North Africa with an artillery unit during WWII. He was called out of his billet one night by his commanding officer, who shall remain unnamed. He led my dad to a remote area and shared with my dad, that a few days earlier, I had been born back home. And the officer further revealed that he had also became the father of a baby girl at about the same time. Uncharacteristically, the officer took out a flask and shared a toast with my dad. My dad often said that he would follow that officer and General Omar Bradley to hell if necessary.
Though he has been gone for 24 years now, I still thank him for his service every Veterans Day.
