On this Veteran’s day, I want to remember the great Time Life photographer and Marine Officer, David Douglas Duncan. He served in WW2 and Korea as a combat photographer and is remembered for his photo journal/book “I Protest” about the siege of Khe Sanh where he was embedded with the marines. I met him in the PIO darkroom in DaNang and learned to use a K2 yellow filter when shooting B&W (TriX) from him.I have this image of him with a Nikon and a Leica (I think) hanging in my darkroom.

And a thank you and remembrance to all the ex combat photographers on this forum (I know we have at least one)

I’m also thinking of EL Shapiro of this forum, who served 2 tours in VietNam as a combat photographer.

For those of us that came back safe and whole (though perhaps scarred), it was a blessing to survive, but many of our brothers and sisters were not so lucky. I’ve buried two family members so far from the effects of agent Orange.

Sorry four your family losses. A very high probability that agent Orange will be the cause of my death. My brother in law (Vietnam vet, 100% like me) gave up, after months in and out of the hospital and the constant medical/mental stress, and took his own life… now my sister had a mental break and had to be put in a personal care home… in the lock down wing. It destroys families, not just vets.

Yes it does, and I think it’s more prevalent than most people realize. Sorry for your pain - somehow I avoided it in my tour (68-69), at least so far.

Take care,
Chris
