I continued to "work out" using the Z9 paired with the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 lens in shutter priority for some hockey action. I've tried to max ISO out at 3200 and shoot at 1/1000 - 1/1250. I've now tried this combination for hockey, basketball and volleyball. I'm really liking it. I've added the ability to toggle FX/DX function to one of the function buttons so it actually lets me reach out to a bit more than 200mm. I never thought I would say this, but for now the 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 are taking a bit of a vacation on the shelf!

Are these shot from the press area? You don't shoot these through the glass, do you? I'm just wondering how you get all the various angles.

I can shoot around the rink as long as I am not in the reserved table(s) area. but there is a pretty good sized spot from which the Zamboni enters that I can use. So I can set up on either side of the goal judge, on the floor, shooting through the glass. No special opening.

Thank you for the informative response. I'm surprised that you can get this kind quality shooting though the glass. Even TV cameras pick up the scuffs and scratches on the glass.

For me, it is as if I am shooting through fencing or netting. About the only time I am further away from the glass is when players are checked into the glass directly in front of me. Even 1" plexi bends! I keep my lens hood on and generally shoot about 3-6" from the glass.

I like all these shots. You have mastered your camera and lenses for sure. Good work.
I might try different settings because your iso is very low at 3200. I might try manual 1/1250 at 4 or so for added depth of field from the player's arm to the player. Just a thought. What do you think?

Thanks, Jules. I have another game coming up Wednesday. I'll give it a try. Won't be the normal conditions as it is a special Education Day game, but it will give me an idea of how the shutter speed and added dof work. I'll see what the ISO comes out as with there being more natural light coming in. I like the idea though.

Yes give it a try, that camera can handle iso up to 12000 easy with great image quality.
