This is my first decent Sandhill in flight capture - very high on my to do list ! I believe this is a juvie from this spring's fledge. I think his eye is half closed ?? He was flying with his parents - this is the best of what I was able to catch.......

Canon 80D and Canon 400 f4 DO, ISO 200, 1/1000, f5.6 in early morning direct sun from behind me .....

Very cool photo! What makes you think it's a juvenile? The coloration makes it look fully adult to me.

Nice Larry. Pretty sure that is an adult considering the red head. The young birds don't have that color, yet. nicatating (sp?) membrane covering the eye.

The feathering at the back of the red on the head gives me the impression of downy feathers ......and I have some prior knowledge of this group in this area ....

Larry
Firstly I like this very much..
Did you crop this to frame it this way or capture it this way? I'm asking because I see other images, like this, where less than the entire bird or animal is shown. When done well I think the effect is striking. I have tried but have never been pleased with the result so I never have followed through with the edit, unless of course my subject was to large for the frame. In that case I wish I had less glass.

Yes, I would not normally crop this way .......this was captured at the edge of the frame so I really had NO crop choice on 2 sides - the right and bottom - but the more I see this cropping, the more I like it ....
