For Windows, there is an easy solution - other than forcing a shut down.

Press: CTRL/Alt/Delete. That will sign you out of Windows. You'll be able to sign back in when prompted.
This might be helpful to remember.

I hope you don't have to, but...
Good luck.

I would then run a Windows defender scan, even though it is started up at login. Then I would run Malwarebyte (the free version) which I have installed and only use "manually".

I have run Malwarebyte(paid) 24/7 for the past 11 years. No issues so far. I'm on my computer 5 - 7 hours a day and it runs 24/7 with an occasional restart. So far, no issues with malware.
Thanks for the response.

Thanks. I’ll try it.
Seems like all the companies are trying to get us to buy (their) latest programs.

I can tell you from experience that sometimes that does not work. I have had to unplug mine on occasion.

Correct.

I've had a few instances where I had to hold down the power button to get the computer to turn off.
Then I turn it back on and wait for the OS to repair itself, followed by a successful reboot.

I've researched it and apparently there are exceptions to it working. I apologize. I meant well.

On a couple of occasions I've gotten this warning that my computer has been locked up with a number to call. When I've shut down the computer and restarted it, the problem disappeared. I ran a virus scan after each event and the computer was clear. I just hit the wrong thing that brought up this pop-up.

Even with Macs there are problems.... A lot of " informational " popups are viruses in themselves; I NEVER respond to these popups... I did a search on anti malware programs and installed INTEGO. Yes, sometimes the anti malware and real malware clash at boot up and a restart is necessary... At least the malware is NOT taking over your machine and they are being quarantined... At least with you it was just a miskey apparently... They WANT you to hit that popup button and THEN you are in REAL trouble.
