Verification Codes

I hate it when a company wants to verify that I'm me, and they send me a "Verification Code." For another month, I'll be getting mail order Rx from Walmart. Yesterday afternoon, they sent me a Verification Code. It arrived over twelve hours later - at 4:00 AM.

A few months ago, Apple sent me a code, and it took several months to arrive. By then, the code was invalid.

They sent them via email I'll bet.
I've had some come in after 2+ hours.....
Text messaging seems to be almost immediate.

Yup, I have to remember to take my phone to the computer in the other room.....
But better than someone compromising one's account(s).

I agree; it's a pain in the ass but it does provide another layer of security. I wonder how long before hackers figure out a way around the procedure and we have to use yet another device to receive a second verification code to verify the first verification code.

You can never have too much security - think about using 2 factor authentication, a good antivirus program and a VPN for starters.

It seems to me that the speed is determined at the other end. Some come before I can even check my email, others consistently take hours and often do expire before I can use them.

For me, the problem is where did they send it, email, message or Authenticator app? I have to read the notice carefully to see where I can find it!

YUP!

Logged in one time to an account, they sent the code to my wife's phone.
(Our primary banking concern asks where to send it.)

Sometimes I need to log in to the account to find out where the code was sent. But I need the code to log in.

Catch 44

(Twice as bad as Catch 22)

Whenever I try to retrieve my monthly billing for SDG&E on the computer, they don’t like the sign-in password or tell me I am not registered in the “user” heading.
They send me a verification code on my cell phone, but by the time I get that (later) code, they have have nullified the previous (secret) code.
After two attempts, I give up and wait for the billing from the mailman. He knows my code…..Funny thing, even when I don’t respond on the internet……they always know where to send me a billing [on time]!
They must be psychic?

The chief purpose of computers
Is to irritate humans and annoy them forever!

And they are doing it all too well!

I have one bank that always requires sending me a confirmation code, but then they ask ME for the cell phone number to send it to. Now what good is that? Any hacker could put in his own number!

It's the norm here (U.K.), text via mobile normally within 30 seconds, sometimes a minute. There's an option to resend a code if it doesn't get here - but we've never needed it.
