How to improve this photo in Gimp

Just wanted to know how to improve this photo. I know it's not that sharp, so I know that will affect the quality. I don't have LR or PS. I'm told to try to increase use of post-processing, since I try to just let the images be viewed as they come out of the camera. Please be kind.

If it was mine I'd denoise the sky and darken the foreground. Bringing out more detail in the moon is a possibility but not necessarily a good idea. You may prefer the moon to be left a little soft. Brightening the moon slightly may be all that's needed.

I don't know if Gimp can improve a soft photo.

I haven't used GIMP in a long time. Does it have sharpening or denoise features? I don't think it does and I think this is what the image needs. I really like the composition, though.

I do not use Gimp (hoping to try it over the Winter), but I would expect it has full picture controls for lighten/darken and increase/lower contrast. I would expect a major picture improvement just from (gently) increasing the contrast. If you get the best look to the moon/sky, you might need to darken (parts of) the foreground. I often use a large brush with a neutral dark color at a light percentage, to sweep over areas to gradually darken them.
I do not think this picture will benefit from sharpeneing, but it is limited for viewing size.

I played around with a few GIMP tools; my attached file is the best I could do quickly, and all it took was a little work with the curves tool. If you want to try going deeper, I suggest masking out the moon onto it's own layer, then using curves on everything other than the moon, and try improving the moon by itself.

As Adobe does not make anything available for Linux (not that I want to buy a subscription for anything), I do know a few things about GIMP.

I'm a scientist by trade. If I have to give advice, I MUST try it out first. Right after I downloaded this photo and tried different ways to improve it with GIMP, I realized that I may have broken a Cardinal Rule here. If I did, I want to confess to not having read all the rules, and promise I will never do it again.
