I gave it a listen. Everyone to their opinions.
I thought it a good song, although not exciting for me. It was too much John doing a slow song, with Paul and George doing barely audible back-up vocals. I think Paul (who really decided how all this went) really wanted to honor John by keeping it it close to his version from the tape, and maybe if he did change it up more people would attack him for that because that is what people do. But it would have been a better song if Paul did what he did best, which would be to rearrange it considerably. Paul and George could have had have time where their singing came forward. That, and having Ringo do a powerful pivot on drums. Then, just for a magical moment, the 4 would be clearly together again.

Paul in an interview talked about how poor John's eyesight was.

One night John was over at Paul's parents house doing song work near Xmas, and it got late.

If John thought he might meet any girls, he'd take off the glasses...so he walked home about a mile.

Then he tells Paul the next day about the crazy family up the block that was still out in the front yard playing cards.

So the next day Paul walked over to John's house...he had a look...it was a nativity scene.
