I would agree most of the time, but sometimes you see displays of poster-sized prints from days past, even the last century, and what's really interesting is in the details you can pick up on close scrutiny, the clothing, the means of transportation, the kinds of stores etc.

Moving to the present, I've taken pictures of scenes with a lot of information in them, and I find it interesting to look at some of those pictures up close to see what I missed with the naked eye. This is just me, not advice for anyone else.

Exactly. We have several dozen 8x10 B&W prints of our city approximately 100 years old that we were lucky to get when an old studio closed. My guess is they are contact prints from an 8x10 view camera. When we examine these, it’s the details (which are quite good) that are fascinating - stores, clothing, transportation and parades, as you mention.
