Hi Everyone ,
Ive been using CS5 for a long time now with very good results .
Though I do ahve to convert Nef raw to DNG to use it with raw ..
I now have a new laptop with Win 10 ..
I need editing software but photoshop is pay monthly now so dont want that .
Is there a free software that is as good as CS5 ?
some say Gimp is good but not sure if it does raw .
I dont do much editing of images , just crop , maybe ad contrast etc .
I dont swap heads .
Thanks

GIMP will work with uraw.
On Windows you can use IrfanView or FastStone, both freeware but they use the jpg preview from raw files.

So, why do you edit in ‘raw’?
I use Raw Therapee and Nix.
If you shoot in RAW, avoid editors that force the file down to 8-bit for detailed edits, such as PhotoShopElements. PSE operates only for global edits at a higher bit-depth. Anything done in layers in PSE forces the image to 8-bit, where you should have just shot in JPEG.
GIMP is your most powerful 'free' option. To get RAW files into GIMP, there are other free conversion software options. I don't know them, use them, so the best option I don't have off the tip of my tongue. Just use google to find.
Move CS5 to the new computer. Buy CS6 for the new computer (I see it is expensive-- so maybe not). Pick up PS Elements when it's on sale. Get a "free" or low cost photo editing software program.

LOL. Both softwares are unsupported, now by more than a decade of calendar time. One would need an original install file and all 'point update' files, also in a digital format. I'd still expect problems, if the software expects to do any verification against Adobe. The original install media (disk) probably won't run on modern computers due to viruses that used to exist inside the install software. Not the Adobe software, but the types of programming the older software install programs used to use. Most old software cannot be installed on modern Apple equipment because Apple has disabled those 'install' program types from running. Windows is more flexible, but not by much, in this area.
I went from CS5 to Affinity Photo. It's not free but excellent software at a very reasonable price.

Photoshop Elements would probably be more familiar to you and similar to CS5 .... but as mentioned it will not work on a 16 bit images.
Affinity Photo also similar to CS5 ... better price than Photoshop Elements ... end of Nov should see a nice sale price.
Gimp would probably be the larger learning curve then the other two programs ... but free.
No sign-in or internet connection hassles.
Only need basics you say ... take the time and learn what you need with Gimp.
My 2 cents.

My scanner came with a ‘limited’ version of Photoshop, and once I had learned it, I found ‘gimp’ to be easy - of course, ‘gimp’ was designed by people like me for people like me.

This is not quite the case with RAW. I have been using IrfanView with Sony RAW (ARW) for some yeqrs, I alternate between using the RAW as seen by IrfanView or the JPEG as seen by IerfanView. Both work OK. --Richard
