Gray-crowned Rosy Finches aren’t seen too often here in central Oregon. A flock showed up recently and triggered a flurry of rare bird alerts on eBird. Lots of people went to try to see them. I spent 2.5 hours on my first visit, without success. Frustrating, but as a friend told me after I failed to find the flock, birds carefully monitor how much energy you’ve expended to see them, and when you surpass the MBR (Minimum Bird Requirement), you will undoubtedly see them. He was so right. I returned to the spot the next day, and sure enough, the flock flew in right as I got out of my car! The drank from a puddle, where they had been seen recently. I only had about a 30-second window to take some photos before they flew off and perched in some distant trees. I managed to get some fairly good photos. This is my favorite.

Beautiful shot. I used to chase rare birds when I was younger. Probably my best find was a Little Curlew. Too bad I wasn't a picture taker back then

I recently heard the phrase, « (Preparation + Skill) x Patience = Luck » . You were «  lucky » the second day thanks to persistence. These are beautiful birds, and I am sure you have several memorable shots. Congratulations.

P.S., « distant trees » implies the need for longer lenses. I believe B&H is open today…:-).

Wow....great photo. sometimes patience pays off, and this sure did.
very cute birds.
That happened to me a while back, rare bird alert. I tried getting photos w/o any luck. so I went back the 2nd morning and suddenly that bird (Northern Jacana) splashed down right in front of me...allowing me to get some decent photos.
