Using filters

I hope this question has not been asked before, I hate facing the wrath of those people with photographic minds that remember every post ever made on UHH, but here goes. I like using a lens hood on my lenses. When using a CP filter, it is rather difficult, if not impossible to adjust that filter without taking off the lens hood, adjusting the filter, then replacing the filter. Is there a better way of doing it without taking off that hood? I realize I am not the brightest bulb on the tree, so please spare the ink in trying to prove to me how stupid I am, thanks in advance!

I just had this very problem last weekend. I have no suggestions. When I reach inside to turn the filter, my hand causes blurring and shadows and I can't see the effect. I ended up taking the hood off when I adjusted.

Simplest thing I found was just to remove the hood, adjust the filter, replace the hood...

(I don't care if a question was asked 2 weeks ago or 2 years ago. A "search" won't be very helpful.)

Some of the newest lenses have hoods with openings that enable access to the CPL without removing the hood. I think I have two such lenses. But, having to remove the hood, or just shoot without the hood, is really how that game is played.

Other considerations: why do you need a circular polarizer? I own several at different filter sizes. I know there are some specific reflective situations they address. But, for just general shooting, what situations are you working in where a CPL is the best solution? Would skipping the CPL be a better / same result? I use mine next to never, considering them more of the internet urban legends of photography I mistakenly followed before getting a better filter against such nonsense.

Another idea, would skipping the hood be the better approach? Personally, I'd rather shoot without the CPL than without the hood, but I can see where skipping the hood is a better approach over removing / replacing the hood to adjust the CPL.

If I was concerned about whether I was repeating myself, I would simply browse my UHH profile and my topics-created list to refresh my memory (or the log of all my posts that includes all the replies), in the privacy of my own home.

It IS reality......

Maybe people might get the hint?

Some hoods have cutouts for rotating filters.
You could easily modify your hood to do the same thing.
Put the hole on the bottom and you are in business. Easy.

Well, it it's the same answer for a similar (or same) question, go ahead and repeat one's self.
(I don't memorize all questions or responses.)

I had a calculus teacher in college, when if someone asked a question about a certain problem on a page in the text book, he'd look in his textbook and would say "I already did that one, any other questions?".
(We hated that.....)

One hint when using a polarizing filter, whether circular or linear, if you are using it to darken the sky ior reduce reflections s to turn it so that the index mark is pointing at the sun. This should give you a good starting point and may need no further adjustment. But it may not give you the effect you want if you are using a really wide lens.

I have noticed the same issue. Not convenient at all. Though the hoods for some of my longer and newer lenses have little pop or slide out doors that might allow one to rotate a PL / CPL filter. But for the most part like [CHG_Canon] and for similar reasons I don't use filters and find I don't need them for most shots. Good luck.

I have a Tamron 28-300 with its designated hood. I'm able to reach in and put my finger on the rough edge of the filter and turn it. I do have to be careful to not create smudges, but it does work.

When I google "benefits of using a cpl", I get a few results, more than I'd bother even scanning. Most have various example images showing things like removal of reflections, and then other 'benefits', most of which I'd know / plan to edit into (out of) the image later. Excluding the reflections, when specifically desired, I just don't see the need for the CPL for images I'm capturing in digital RAW and plan to edit digitally.

Hi lefryD500, I’ve had and recognize this inconvenience while using CPL filters also.
One solution….use a screw mounted lens hood into the CPL (with the same mm thread size of course). Now you can turn the lens hood for you desired adjustments. It sounds risky…since the concern will be the physical strength of the CPL to support the hood. Well, it's worked so far.

Like a collapsible rubber hood.

That could work....just screw mount it ON the CPL thread.
