Olympus and OMD cameras (at least their OMD Em1 mark iii and OM-1) cameras have a feature that allows the user to record a short voice memo, using the camera, for images so that the user does not have to take written notes. The recording is done during on the review screen. Very simple to do. I do not know if other systems have this feature, but fyi...maybe something that will help you in your photographic endeavors if your chosen system has this feature.

Several years ago I noticed than an events shooter was speaking voice notes to a very large (flagship ?) Nikon SLR.

I doubt that the audio becomes part of the image file. I suspect its in another folder on the camera card with some sort of flag that associates the audio with the proper image.

Orphoto and all!

After reading Hip Coyote's OP, I thought I would Google "Audio Notes" and found as a Nikon user, this link to a Nikon Z9 article from its manual about this feature:

https://onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/z9/en/08_voice_memos_01.html

Old articles from DP Review and Nikonians mention a few other cameras that have this feature: Canon 1D and Nikon D2X. If one researches, other cameras with this feature are available. In another article, a Z6 was mentioned as well.

Be well! Ed

I have found that feature useful when shooting events. Particularly when someone is featured in the photo it helps me remember names for the keywords. Or other useful notes for the photo. Been using it since around 2008.

All current cameras can record video with an audio file. If you want to minimize card space use, set it to the lowest video quality setting. Lightroom Classic sorts by capture time. The video file will be next to the still image file.

Am I missing anything?

Thanks for mentioning. Nikon Z6II - see p. 803 in the user guide - I had no idea - I'll have to give it a try.

I used to use it with short notes. I haven't checked recently but I think the audio recording was limited to 30 seconds.

You are. This is recording a very brief audio with a still image.

I think you’re right. It’s kinda cool. I just have to remember to do it.

I had a Nikon D2X with that feature. I was shooting a time trial bicycle race, so one rider at a time, and I could easily identify each one which certainly beat writing a list and trying to match it to the riders.

A great idea. (wish that I had that option on the thousands of 35 mm slides
that I've collected since 1964.
(My brain didn't record any of the locations or dates, except for the Kodak
company that printed the dates of processing on the cardboard casing.)
