Last week I had asked for info on shooting an annular eclipse. Had a few helpful hints and links, so "thanks" for those. I watched the entire Youtube video with Photo Pills and Joshua Cripps about his award-winning eclipse-with-camel photo; that gave me a good start. I knew I had to be in a location to line up something on earth with the 10:30am sun, and plenty of room to maneuver as the event unfolded.
My wife and I left our Airstream-in-the-desert B-N-B at 4:50am & drove 100 miles to Capitol Reef NP, Utah. Had never been there, and found it to be an awesome park in itself, especially at sunrise. For an hour, we drove through various side-paths, looking up at canyon walls to guess what rock formations might be good possibilities. One particular pocket canyon did not have dramatic rocks, but did have a good-size sagebrush bush hanging high up at a cliff's edge. As the hour drew near, we returned to that area, with a 60x100yd dry, sandy floor and a dry creek-bed running through it. To our benefit, none of the other 10,000 visitors to the park that day chose our area!
I will only post a couple of the many photos I took that morning to give an idea of our scenario. Here is a little technical info for those who may be curious: Nikon D750, Nikon 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR AF, Lenskins 10x Neutral Density filter for most photos. Photos posted here are from lower-res jpegs; my other SD card has the RAW, which I haven't processed yet. At totality, I did not use the ND filter, but shot at 1/2000sec, f40. All were at ISO 100.
Beautiful set! And you got to discover on of my favorite NPs.
Thanks, Mike. We spent hours after the eclipse, driving and hiking some of the many trails. Though very sunny, the air temp was not hot, like it probably was in August. We felt October is the best time to go to these parks. We went to Bryce after Capitol Reef. Bryce is also amazing, but there, you look down on the best parts. In Capitol Reef, you can drive and hike all through it. My wife advised me not to upload my best photos, as she wants them to be protected from theft. One of them has a similar look to Joshua Cripps' camel photo, but with the bush where the camel would be. Would have loved to put it in here, but didn't want to risk it.
Nice capture of the eclipse.
