Yesterday the shots on the d500 were suddenly over exposed with full sun on the subjects. So I just deliberty underexposed. I shoot full manual. It took about 5 shots before I took the time to check the info button and see I had changed the exposure compensation. Sometimes the +/- button is too close to the iso button. I wear glasses so my eye is offset a bit and seeing everything in the view finder takes effect. Has this ever happened to you or all of you better watching the action in the view finder?

When I shot my D500 in manual, the EC button did not effect the exposure. The EC button only works in Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, or Program. Again, EC has no bearing on your exposure in Manual.
You must have done something else instead.

Post an example image of this situation as an unedited JPEG, storing the file with all the original EXIF. The community can likely point to the specific setting, shown in the EXIF, that explains the exposure issue and the camera configuration being used. From this analysis, you can again consider your camera usage that caused this unexpected configuration.

If you shoot in manual and the EC has an effect on your exposure then you must be in Auto ISO.

While the EC does not change the exposure value in manual it does change the meter display in your viewfinder. If you put EC at -1 then adjust the exposure so the meter shows proper exposure you will actually be at -1.

I was wondering about that.

the internet here in Porec is very slow and I can not upload anything. Data for the photos show exposure compensation + 1.3 ev exposure mode manual. For what it is worth once I changed the EC to zero everything was good.
The next place near Ljubajana might have faster internet and I will load a photo in 2 days if I remember.

Not so. EC does have an effect in Manual mode, it offsets the exposure meter thus offsetting the exposure. I use this all the time.

Never. But I do whatever I can to disable EC.

OTOH never having touched a D500 I wouldnt know if its possible to disarm its EC. You imply that its button operated. The custom menus might have a solution by reassigning or simply disabling the button.

On the D500 the EC isn't very easy to change by mistake. You have to hold down the +/- button then turn the main command dial.

So, youd really hafta make your mistakes intentionally on purpose ?

Acoarst, Hawgsters seem able to defeat any foolproofing that might impede their failures.

Well I guess it wasn't really a mistake. The user intended to use the EC but then forgot to return it back to zero.

Since I shoot manual, I change the ISO and some times don't pay attention to finger placement turn the wheel and inavertantly change the EC and not the ISO. I just screw up sometimes. I could shoot with auto ISO all the time in varying light. But sometimes the results are not what I want. I shoot spot metering most of the time and move the spot to the subject. I find matrix gets it wrong too often.
I need more practice and place my eye high enough that I see the info at the bottom of the screen.

I'm pretty sure that this, or something similar, has happened to just about all of us.
