I Love Conkers

Just a fun post that brings back many happy memories. This time of the year the conkers are falling from the horse chestnut trees so I took a short walk round the corner to see one of the trees.
In junior school I was a bit of a tomboy and used to play strings with the boys, soaking conkers in vinegar, threading string through the middle and trying to demolish their conkers hitting them as hard as can be!
Another lovely memory is of Ted our beautiful feral cat who took a year to tame and loved chasing conkers all over the house. Bob on his early morning walks still collects conkers and we have a place where we keep them in memory of Ted, who went over the rainbow bridge three years ago. The shot is of Ted the very first time he entered the house and wouldn’t advance any further than the kitchen.

I like your presentation of the "conkers", particularly the one hanging on a string. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. The nut of the horse chestnut tree may be called a conker in your back yard but in mine, it's a buckeye. Ohio has a native horse chestnut tree, the Ohio Buckeye tree. The nut looks exactly the same as your conkers including the thorny shell that covers them. Ohio's largest university (The Ohio State University), currently ranked #3 in the national college football (yeah, I know that's different too) are known as the Ohio State Buckeyes. Sorry I ran on so much about the nut instead of what you did with them but all I can say is GO BUCKS!!!

Love the conkers story. We had a horse chestnut tree in our neighborhood but don’t remember the nuts being called conkers. Love the portrait of Ted, he was a handsome boy; sorry that he passed.
