Are These The Same Insect? Moth or Butterfly?

While taking photos of flowers yesterday an unexpected bonus I had not thought of was bees, butterflies or moths, and flies. These butterflies or moths were flitting about often and gave me numerous photo opportunities. While processing them I noticed they may not be the same species. One seems to have white specks on the end of the wings while the other does not. Both however have somewhat of a pointed nose, proboscis. Same butterfly mile long tongue though.

Any thoughts please,

Dennis

The first butterfly is a Milbert's tortoise shell; the second, an American painted lady.
Nice photos! Strix.

Nice photos! Strix.

Thank you very much Strix for the information and for taking a look. I thought they were the same right up until I started processing them. It sounds as if you might be right up there with some of our resident experts.

Pretty great!

Butterflies, for sure, two different species. Images 1-4 and 6-7 are Milbert's tortoiseshell as identified by Strix. Image 5 and images 8-10 are Painted lady, as distinct from the American lady butterfly.

Thank you Blenheim Orange for stopping by as well as the correct identification of the two butterflies. I sure appreciate it.

One of the easiest ways to tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth is to look at the antennae. A butterfly’s antennae are club-shaped with a long shaft and a bulb at the end. A moth’s antennae are feathery or saw-edged.

Just a quick trick.

Thank you very much Mr. B. I will try to remember.

Thank you Sylvia. I like that one too. It shows the pointed nose.

They got it. And I am fairly jealous that you go a Milbert's tortoiseshell. That is a species that is much less common now and I've never seen one.
