My wife and I are planning to visit the BRP in April. We would like to rent a VRBO for a few days somewhere along the Parkway and then explore the area on day trips. Any recommendations on where to park ourselves?
I would go for the Ashville, NC, area. It's both scenic and civilized. There's not much along the the Virginia portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Just like John D. Rockefeller, Jr. chose Mount Desert Island (now home to Acadia National Park), there is a reason why George W. Vanderbilt chose Ashville for a summer home.

we did Blue ridge PKWY and then skyline drive a few times. . Sad to say but after a while you get tired of the vistas.

My wife and I have driven the parkway and Skyline Drive several times by motorcycle and car. You'll find no amenities or lodging directly on either road. Major towns are few and rather widespread. But you'll find all these things in centers off the side roads. There tends to be more on the North Carolina side of the Parkway than on the Virginia side. Personally we like to stay in Blowing Rock, South Carolina. Good luck!
There is a lodge at the top and cabins you can rent .
You don't ever have to leave the parkway as there are plenty of places to stay. If you don't want to stay up top and want to venture away from the drive I loved The Boars head inn.
Pisgah Inn on the parkway below Asheville is a great place to stay. Depending on the length of your stay you could explore north and South of there. Book your room early. They are closed during the winter months but open in April.

FYI Blowing Rock is actually in North Carolina, not South. The Boars Head Inn is a great place to stay, but it's in Charlottesville, Virginia, off of Skyline Drive, not the Blue Ridge Parkway.
