Praying Mantis

I had posted these images in my thread covering Mt. Rushmore but neglected to post them in the macro section where they rightfully belonged. Hopefully some who have not seen them will see them now.

This little peanut was sitting on the top of a marble wall in front of the faces at Mt. Rushmore. I like how he was preening his face as a cat would.

Thank you very much Jack. I have always loved praying mantis. I was way high above the viewing stands and this mantis flew maybe about 40 feet or so flying away from me into somewhat of a forest. I knew they could fly but didn't think that far.

Thank you very much Gary. I sure enjoy photographing them when I see them. I may have mentioned this before but years ago one was on a flower when I lived in So. CA. At the time Monarch caterpillars were all over the place so I fed one to the mantis. I had thought the mantis would sort of nibble on the caterpillar, maybe taking 30 minutes or so to eat it IF it was hungry. Was I surprised when it devoured that thing in a NY minute. A few bites was all it took.

Humans are so lucky to be much bigger than some of these insects.

Thank you Mark. I appreciate your comments. These things are so nice looking she may be refreshing the eyes to look nice for the male she is about to devour. Is there a way to tell male from female except male body parts and icky blood looking stuff between the teeth?

A nice set Dennis, these make such good subjects even if not dining partners.
