I watched and read some reviews of the new Nikon Zf, and the reviewers gushed over it. Nikon seems to have come up with another winner. With the Z8 and Z6 II, I'm all set for the foreseeable future. However, if they ever introduce one with a silver body...

I hope that means they're following a policy of making each camera as good as it can be within the price restraints. Deliberately crippling mid range and low end cameras through fear of cannibalising sales at the high end will only weaken the product line-up and leave the door open for more competitive manufacturers to offer stronger options.

From what I gather the Zf is equipped with the same AF as the Z8. This gives it the AF 3D tracking with subject/face/eye detection which I've found superb. For a camera half the price I believe they've done well.

Interesting, the silver bodies were aimed at the amateur market. Most guys wanted the black version, which, in my honest opinion, looked the best. After all, aren't all Nikon professional camera's manufactured today black.

And it has the Expeed 7 processor. One reviewer said that advancements are expensive at first, so they go into the expensive cameras. As production costs decrease, these advancements go into lower-cost models. The more expensive bodies always have the edge, though.

True, but I wasn't a pro in the 1970s.

Obviously, it's too late for me to edit the error in the title. At 1:35 AM, I wasn't very alert.

Back in the film days we paid extra for the black bodies.

But don't include me in "we." I liked the two-tone look of the silver and black, and I still do.

I think I paid $25 extra to have my Nikon F2AS in black instead of chrome but I know the price came out to $750 with the 50mm f/1.4 AI lens in 1977.

In my days, I remember SLRs costing $250 - $350. I had the 50mm, 135mm, and a T-mount 210mm Soligor zoom.

If the low end were not cannibalized to differentiate from high end then why spend 5k when you can get the same capabilities for $600?

Prestige? πŸ˜‹

The upper models always offer a little bit more. Holding back on features for the lower models will send buyers to a different brand. It's a tough balancing act. Every seller wants lots and lots of sales. Reasonable prices will help to ensure that.

I think it’s just a matter of time until they do.

Sony holds back features, Fuji holds back features etc.
If a $600 camera has the same features as the 5k model and you buy the 5k model there is no prestige as people know that you are an idiot.
90% of the features are not used by the high end purchasers. Those with a modest budget are not wanting those features so why pay for them?
PS the R8 has the same AF as the R3. The R8 actually has a faster ES than the R3. So where it counts they are pretty much the same for a substantial difference.
Pretty much the same for the the R7 vs the R50.
Where it really counts for general photography they are on par.
