Does anyone have any experience using Adobe's DNG format to save raw files?

Pentax DSLR's can produce DNG's by default. I've used DNG through several models without problem, Since DNG tech specs are NOT proprietary--unlike many other raw formats--I expect DNG to be accessible for a long time.

Using DNG with Adobe works without a glitch. The advantage of DNG is that since it works with any RAW format.

What's the advantage of dng? I've got LR but import my camera's CR2 raw files fine.

No, but I'm only using CS5 and LR, and a few plug ins.

I have no experience with CR2 or NEF but I keep seeing posts about new camera CR2's not working with older software until an upgrade is available. Does this imply that the CR2 spec keeps changing? How will that effect future compatibilty for stored files and newer software, will it always support older versions? This is where dng is supposed to solve probleems.

like the man said dng is what you get when you set a pentax to raw.there are some editors that won't process it.if you use it make sure your editors will.

I use it for my RAW files from my Canon SX40.

The advantage for using DNG format RAW files is the format is more universal, more software to open them up. For example, the RAW files from my Canon 5D MK III require a later version of the Canon software or recent updates for PhotoShop CS6. At the office most people only have PhotoShop CS4 or CS5. I am faced with doing all the photo processing, or giving them the JPEG files, or simply converting them to the Adobe DNG format and letting them work with the files.

I suggest you have at the useful article
http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/photoshop/extend.displayTab2.html
which describes the benefits of the Digital Negative (DNG) format.
It was created so as to avoid manufacturer specific formats and has been adopted by most including Adobe who lead the image manipulation software field.

You still have to wait for your software to be able to read a raw file before you can convert.

I read the adobe link.

I'm just wondering how it works in actual practice. I read that it doesn't save some metadata but metadata is combined into the file so you don't have to worry about two files.
