IF you have been following, after a long time of adjusting the Fine Tune and with the gracious help of several UHH mentors... finally have arrived at what appears to ME to be what WAS expected.
Ferruginous Hawk - Rt 66 - Kingman Az
D800e + 500mm PF + TC 1.4iii - 1/3000, f11, iso1100, handheld at 100% sized crop for demonstration
RENTAL D500 tomorrow then WILL compare, next make a decision as to which USED body to purchase to make this an independent system. I use the D800e strictly for LANDSCAPE, although long ago, I did do some Natur work with it as well.
Really nice shot. Feels good when you finally get it all dialed in!

Did you find the TC degraded the image vs cropping?
Not significantly... imo, as you can see with the TC is acceptably sharp, so likely WITHOUT IT would be a tad sharper IF you could get close enough to the object.
I hope that helps some, if not ask away, I am happy to help... I could take pics without the TC if that would help you... let me know, thanks
Yay Richard. That is looking tons better.
We reconfigured the FINE TUNE... it appears the CAMERA MUST be fine-tuned FIRST without the TC. Then with the TC on... the corrections for this set up were Minus Six alone and Minus 17 with TC and that gave us what we see now.
Tomorrow I should get the rental D500, then I will make sure it is ON target without any TC.
IF it is, will go ahead with testing this and see IF I like the results.
I appreciate all the UHH watchers who constructively came to my assistance. I really HAD MY DOUBTS this was ever going to work, am pleasantly surprised by the current results, and BELIEVE ME handling the 500PF is a JOY compared to the PAIN and HEFT of the superlative Canon 500mm f4L1... a great lens but NOT for this old guy anyway.
Will post again what happens with the d500... thanks for the response, Richard

You might miss the mega pixels if you do big crops. Photo looks great & have fun.
Stellar composition Richard... Beautiful color harmonies latent within this enchanting rendering of the raptor...

This has been my experience also with tele-extenders in general.... Albeit not so much with Extension tubes which don't seem to have a significant effect Fine Tune values.
However every Lens/TC/Extension is unique... experience is a brutal teacher...
Enjoy your ultra light Telephoto... so jealous... lol
So a person would have to constantly change the fine tuning settings back and forth each time whether shooting with or without the TC? Maybe a second body for each combination?
Some Nikon bodies have a FineTuning option and you can SAVE the changes. Once you fine-tune the body to the lens, it will save that setting, I have now on the d800e two saved settings, and the camera automatically picks up the electronic settings depending on whether I use the TC or not.
Thanks,
even a broken clock is correct twice a day! a blessing to see anytime... capturing an image is always a bonus

Without using <quote reply>, alphadog did respond back to your question. That is 'no', one doesn't have to change things back n forth, in fact, no need to change anything. The lens and TC have unique digital identifiers, so the camera 'knows' when the specific equipment is mounted to the body. Any focus-tuning adjustments are applied dynamically by the camera body, but only when the specific lens(es) and TC are mounted.

The eye & beak look perfect. Hopefully, we can consider the equipment issue resolved? You should reconsider your processing workflow. The halo effect is subtle, but you're still 'over processing' your images in a way that generates this false halo around the subject.
