A 1DX series is a big improvement in terms of both low light and DR compared to the ID series. The below chart shows all the 1D and 1DX models. The first column is the DR in stops, the 2nd is the high ISO performance, and the 3rd is the low light/high ISO performance in stops.

BTW, the 1D and 1DX series bodies, which are professional bodies and optimized for fast moving events, are both big and quite heavy. My thought is that coupled with a long lens, a tripod with a gimbal head my prove to be a big help for BIF.

Yes, and the low light/DR of ALL the 1D series is better than the XXD series crop cameras. The weight of the 1D mark IV is of no consequence since I will be using a battery grip anyway for whatever camera (7DII, 80D, 90D ) I will be using - and the reason is not for the battery but for the vertical controls when shooting in the vertical orientation. Once you get into the 1DX series, the price goes UP quickly And, as mentioned, I really do prefer at least some crop factor to keep extender use to a minimum with a 400 DO lens.
There has been some mention on the internet that by using a Kenko 2X that it fools the camera and allows muli-point AF - tho, there WILL be some loss of acuity compared to the Canon III version extender ?.

Thanks ! ....I want the grip for vertical controls anyway so do not mind the size/weight.

The 1D/1DX series of cameras are great professional workhorses for action photography - hope you find a nice one that doesn’t have a million clicks.
