Well, to begin with, I’m not a social media guy. I peruse Facebook to see what’s there, often finding an interesting recipe, but that’s about it. I don’t do Snap Chat, Twitter, or whatever it’s called now, Instagram or any of those kinds of social media platforms. I don’t follow anybody, but I admire my grandson’s photography.

I’m not sure what to think of this article other than he’s tooting his own horn a lot. My personal opinion is that “following” someone probably gives one some good ideas, but actually studying the art provides actual learning, at least on an intellectual basis. A negative side to following people like this fellow does, is that it can lead to one developing their own style that mimics their favorite photographer, or artist, if you will. I wonder if prominent artists might resent someone benefitting from someone else copying their kind of work.

At the end of the day, I am not a professional photographer, not even a serious amateur. I enjoy photography and I do it for my own enjoyment, not for any kind of benefit. While I enjoy viewing others’ work, I don’t strive to emulate it, but I do pick up some tips now and then. I just like to capture a moment, a scene, a subject then sit back, look at the picture and say, “Isn’t that cool?” My $.02.

It’s why I am on UHH…I tried following some professionals, but got too intimidated and too much GAS.

I am inspired by many here, and I have learned to discern what I appreciate as a good photograph but not my style, vs what inspires me to try to achieve do better with my own.

I think you have just made the concise point to what I posted above. Thank you.

Yeah, I'm kind of in your group although I would consider myself a semi-serious amateur. I like exploring different techniques, and learning new tricks etc. I don't have a particular style of Photography that I favor over another. When we travel it's mostly walking the streets and photographing whatever interest me. I do like to photograph street art/street murals and I have done a few trips doing only that. I thought the author here made an interesting point of not having to travel to exotic places to take interesting images. You can do this right at home or even inside your own house. I'm hoping the people in our little section will become a tad bit more active and post more of the images they have taken with their smartphones.

Very interesting article. I was never on social media but now I have to start. Started my own photography business. No just submitting my prints to a marketing agency not doing weddings or paid shoots. It is all new to me learning as I go. Never followed anyone except maybe a pretty girl.

Good luck with you business. I have several friends that do art shows and such with their photography. My niece's husband just started a Photography business shooting High School sporting events. I'm retired and I can't find " Start a Photography Business" anywhere in the retirement handbook. LOL. I'm looking forward to seeing your images from your new Samsung. Maybe you can become our go to person for Androids questions.

Thanks going to need all the luck I can to break even. I failed retirement 101 keep going back to work. In 2014 retired to Mexico and got deported back in 2015. The court admin got me my job back and am still working more than ever. I am still learning the android but would always be glad if it is something I know. With the I phone I joined I phone academy it was $49 for the course and Emil was fantastic. Learned a lot even a better way of holding the phone. Have a fantastic weekend.

We moved about 50 miles South of Cancun just a little South of Playa del Carmen a small area called Playa Car. It was beautiful and the people were fantastic made a lot of good friends. The bureaucrats not so much. Most of my photos from there were taken with my old Nikon D7000,

For me, looking at others’ photos, like here on UHH, gives me some good ideas and examples to keep in mind, but I don’t actually follow anyone. There are certainly some very talented photographers on UHH.
