Actually the issue today is Canon vs Sony.
Nikon is a distant third competing to maintain third with Olympus and Fuji in the market.

If you want to make the post to get 10 pages of responses I think you will get it.
If you want a real answer to your question from UHH's members? You will never get it.

So you are doing OK if you're troll but you would be very disappointed if you are not.

"With the wrong brand, success is probably 99% luck. But with Canon equipment, it's 100% the photographer."

I do not agree with this Paul. I do not believe, Nikon, Canon, Sony or Fuji is the "wrong brand." Professionals use them all and they all will produce excellent quality images if the operator knows what he or she is doing.

"Sony makes Nikon's high-end sensors. Nikon is doomed."

I do not agree with this either. Nikon once made a sensor for the D2H, a professional camera with only 4 Mp. I owned that camera who had an excellent rendition of colors, first generation Nikon colors. In spite of its 4 Mp. it was a very capable camera. I seldom enlarge beyond 12x18 inches but I went 20x30 with the D2H out of curiosity and all the details were rendered beautifully with that enlargement. It was not the best camera to control noise, not many were at the time but it was a great tool. I guess OM Digital Solutions (Olympus) is also doomed because they buy sensors from Sony.

With the new Z8 and the outstanding Z and S lenses Nikon is selling at records high for them. Their other mirrorless cameras are also selling pretty good.
In regard to the questions by the OP I would say select a camera that you like and you feel comfortable with, mirrorless or dSLR and if you know the basics of photography you will do very well.

Before anyone can answer your question you need to exclude the word “ better” from it. You, and many others fail to realize the ambiguty of that word. “Better” than WHAT? If you are looking for information you need to learn to define your search. “Better” has no defined parameters that could be universally accepted to compare objects. It can only be used to express personal preferences. If that is what you seek expect many differences in opinion, most of which will be conflicting.

Who are prettier blonds or brunets, tall or short, Fords or chevies........ poor Sony not even honorable mention.

An impossible question even if asked in seriousness.

Go to a camera store and handle the cameras you're considering.

I think my Nikons are superb bodies and lenses are as well. I am extremely pleased with them. Personally, and in my opinion, Nikon’s ergonomics, functionality image quality are completely satisfying to me and I prefer Nikon to the brands you have mentioned.

I repeat, there are no bad cameras today, some are just better than others and those differences frequently come down to personal preferences.

You have fallen into an advertising trap. It's the one that the owners of this forum have used for years to attract new members. It's an interesting question. It has brought many new members, and it has been discussed many times. Unfortunately, the answers are almost always nothing but worthless drivel.

You see, photographers as a whole tend to be very one-dimensional in their thinking. Almost every answer you read to your question will be from someone who has some limited knowledge of his own brand and essentially no knowledge of the other brands. The few cases which are exceptions to that are damaged equally or more, because they generally are some sort of obligatory justification for the switch.

Since this is a forum made up mostly of older members, the problems just described are made worse by the increasing tendency to be driven by opinions tather than facts that seems to come with age. There are a few exception, but they can sometimes be hard to pick out.

My suggestion is to stop trying to get to the end of your journey in one step. Pick out and buy a nice used camera. Avoid "beginner" or entry-level cameras of any brand. They can be a nightmare to use. Review and learn just what photography is and how it's accomplished. As you learn more, you will be smarter about what to look for if you run out of gas with that first camera. You can make your own choices without having to rely on people who, in reality, don't know any more than you do.

I believe all of the fan boys get no money from the manufacturers be it Canon, Nikon or Sony. Those who got paid by the manufacturers are generally very subtle.
