The impossible drum solo - as only he could perform.

Thanks for a great link Mark. I'm still torn between Rich and Krupa for GOAT with Morello nibling around the edges.

No contest if drumming skills are the criteria for measurement. Rich, hands down.

I saw him play when I was 16, 50 or so years ago, at my high school in CO. He threw me a drumstick and I gave it to a friend who drummed at the time. I didn’t realize how great Mr Rich was until much later.

When I was an early teen I saw the combined Dorsey bands, with Buddy Rich on the drums. An amazing night!!!

Always a Buddy Rich fan -- but a very disappointing memory! Late '60s our high school stage band (for which Buddy was an icon) made special arrangements (and worked to get parental support) to see him play at a club in Rochester, NY. The bummer for the night: right after the first set finished, local police put him in handcuffs and marched him off stage for marijuana possession. Never did find out where the bust originated but the good news is after a delay they did let him back on for the final set. Guess we can now say times really have changed. A really late (school) night but memorable for both the music and the "incident."

He played at Davidson College when I was a student there in the 1970s. He was a bit younger than this, then. The guy played with the swing bands my Dad liked back in WWII. When I told him I'd seen Buddy Rich, he was floored! Of course, then he had to pull out all his old 78 RPM discs...

This was obviously a great set. I wish the audio were better, but it's digitized from analog broadcast video tape. Their standards were barely better than AM radio.

Thanks for the response. I saw him at JATP and Birdland in the 60’s.

BTW: I sent you a PM recently with a few links for Trane.

Best regards,
Mark

For some reason, it didn't come through. I just checked my last six months' PMs, and did not find your post.

Just a short side bar, a man by the name of Paul Lovett was the first person to get a PHD in jazz drumming. He also taught the kid who played "little Ricky " on I Love Lucy. He was also a band teacher in Lubbock, Texas in the late 50's early 60's. A great man and drummer, proficient on all musical instruments.
