South Bend zoo on a bright September morning All close shots because I only had my 150-600mm lens with me. I read later on that these guys are relatively harmless unless you go within ten miles of them

Very nicely done, Joe. Interesting how the floating algae sticks to their skin, providing a bit of natural camouflage.

Here in South Florida they are plentiful during our winter months when they go to the banks to sunbath. In the Everglades National Park rangers warn visitors to stay a minimum of 15 feet from them since they are wild animals.
They are not as aggressive as many believe, they are territorial and when they are with their babies do not even dream of coming close. Never show them you intend to harm them because an attack will follow.

I visit the Everglades each year several times during winter when tourists are also plentiful. I have never witnessed an attack. I saw once a tourist trying to get close with a cell phone and I warned him of the danger. In another occasion I saw an Asiatic trying to grab the tail of one and I do not believe he could understand English so I contacted one of the rangers to avoid an accident that could have been fatal. They are most powerful with their tales and do not even dream of running for safety because they are faster.

Just keep away 15 feet from them and do not do anything stupid and you will be fine.

10 Miles~! Humph, I lived for many years on Picciola Island in Lake Griffin, Leesburg Florida. That lake is the most heavily populated lake in Florida. A dead gator on the beach is not dead... they sun themselves to warm up. Mating season and the time when they protect the young is also very dangerous.

The last striking photo of the claws... again makes me wonder why 5 is a magic number as is 3 in primitive beasts... even the human beast.

Presenting the parts as you did gives better emphasis to the primitive lethal being that they are... well done.
Did you throw them a raw chicken to pay for posing?
