I also have this book, David Busch, bought it at Barnes and Noble. Am 3/4 the ways through it and constantly go back to it for detailed information, even though I have the .pdf version of the manual on my computer for easy access. Hey speaking of Syracuse, I'm also a transplant, to Tucson AZ. Lived 56 years in Fulton, Village of Phoenix and finally Liverpool, N.Y. I also left for economic reasons 8 years ago. Now Retired. Don't miss driving and clearing snow everyday from my vehicles though. Still SU fan..... Go Orange!! Someday I'll figure out how the quotes work, as I tend to post in the wrong area....

As a transplant into Syr, the GoOrange thing was a big lump to swallow. I enjoy the area and know Phoenix and L'pool well. Last year, when I retired, I vowed to never shovel another flake of snow -but we had the mildest winter ever! Lots of changes in the last 8 years, too, but I'll bet you hear about that from friends.

With the Busch book, I am lugging it everywhere, and am currently refreshing my know-how between mouthfuls of left-over turkey and cranberry sauce.

actually we just went back for a family visit, a month ago and I was shocked to see Carrier gone. I mean I knew it was gone elsewhere, but they actually knocked all the buildings down and made a park. After driving by it for 35 years on my way up the hill to Bristol Myers, I couldn't wrap my head around the "Emptiness". And as for the snow.... well one thing I learned after living there for 56 years....When you have a hot and dry summer, like you had, be very aware of oncoming winter. Lake Ontario will be VERY warm for the lake effect snow. As for the book, it is extremely informative. sometimes going into so much depth, I may have to read it again to make sure I comprehended it the first time. Never knew from the manual how the mirror lock up function worked at all for long exposures.

Yes, I am finding that some of the book goes deeper than "necessary" but I prefer that to less informative. The author does make personal comments that give the book a friendlier, personally tested/use of equipment sense that I appreciate. He is not just a "tester."

Yeah, well all that stuff around Carousel is also gone/flattened and cleaned up. The area is looking much better, but the... um, discharge water issue is still an issue. No one wanted to rent the kayaks by the "overflow" outlet! And they are cleaning up the lake so maybe it won't be in the top 5 polluted.
Seriously, the area has been very good to me, so I love seeing progress. I try to look at it with new eyes for its inherent beauty. And it is where I got serious about photography, so there are all those warm fuzzies, too. AND THERE IS THE FABULOUS COMMUNITY DARK ROOM at SU. WOW. That is an amazing resource for photographers!!! Just fab.

Just got a 60d, sitting here going over manual and camera. Can any of you 60d shooters recommend any books to supplement the manual. While the manual is ok, there has to be something better. Thanks for any help that may be offered. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Yes! David Busch's Canon EOS 60D: Digital SLR Photography
ISBN: 978-1-4354-5938-0
It is comprehensive, a good read, well-illustrated. I heartily recommend it. Worth the bucks for making this camera sing.

Thanks, I was looking at that on amazon. Looks really helpful. Did you find the manual that came with camera just not helpful enough? Lived many years in the wSyracuse area then moved south with job, miss the snow! Thanks again.

The manual has it all, I guess, but it is just a skeleton compared to this book. It will take a long time to get through the whole book, but, of course, I cherry pick what I am desperate to know at the moment. The section on off camera flash is extremely helpful and up-to-date with the current Canon line of flashes. Mine is the 430 series and each model is addressed separately. I cannot recommend this highly enough as the a tremendous resource.
My camera is MQ in Syracuse - skilled and knowledgable staff there and good deals. I moved to Syracuse for a job about twenty years ago, but grew up in Michigan and lived in the Rochester area, schooled at SUNY Albany -- so I am a transplant and enjoy the area a lot. Last year we were almost bare of snow and, yes, I miss it when it is not a few feet deep most of the winter! Of course, the city is expert at snow removal, so it is not an issue. I recall storms with a few feet and within hours, folks are out. It helps to live on a fire-engine emergency run

(Quote) Took your advice and ordered the book by David Busch. Oh yes MQ Camera, have been in there many times and spent many bucks in my old 35mm days. Johnson camera was another spot is used to go to also. They were on Erie Blvd., don't think they are around anymore.[/quote]

Right, no Johnson Camera on Erie. But the original, amazing guys are still at MQ doing an great job. They are so on top of things that I am happy to go in there every time. Just got help from them to connect an old Bausch&Lomb telescope to my Canon. Got the tele from my long-gone Dad who connected it to a Nikon F. Now my grandsons are using the tele on my 60D. Still lovin' MQ!!

I looked my 60D up on YouTube. I have found about 50 short movies 5 - 6 minutes long, from 3, 4 good sources that are tutorial courses for the camera. I use these to help me greatly. I pick on one topic and then go through the tutorial on that topic from each source as they all have their own little spins, and sitting watching, going along with my camera in my hands at the same time really assists getting the topic loaded into my head.

I have also simply printed out the pages on one particular topic from the manual at a time, 2 - 3 sheets, put them in a folder in my camera bag and simply focused on using that topic for a couple of days so as to slowly work through the plethora of things, but for me the You Tube approach really works. I just take 1 topic only and simply work with only that variable for several photo sessions to the exclusion of anything else that I could be doing or altering.

Doug,
This isn't a book about your camera but I think it is one of the best books that any photographer can read.

The BetterPhoto Guide to Exposure.
