I have the Nikkor 24-85 and can't seem to get it calibrated to my D7200 to give sharp pictures. Thinking of replacing it with the Nikkor 16-85 f/3.5-5.6. Any thoughts? I have read that the 16-85 is a very sharp lens.

It's sharp, has good contrast, fringing is almost non-existent and it has a very good focal range. For quite a long time it was my only lens.

I had the 16-85 and wore it out over a good many years. I don't think Nikon makes it anymore. I replaced it with a Nikkor 16-80 which has worked out well for me for a walking around lens when I don't need a longer lens.

The current model is the 16-80 f/2.8-4. I looked at this lens a couple of years ago, but didn't buy it because it seemed too expensive at $1100 for a lens that is f/4 past about 28mm. Even used ones were selling for about $900 at that time. (But be aware that this is pretty much a minority opinion. Tons of folks have and love that lens.) I ended up buying a very nice used 24-120mm f/4 full frame lens instead for $425.
If you are ok with 24mm at the wide end (since you have the 24-85), that might be something to consider. I am confident that you could buy both the 24-120 and a brand new 10-20mm DX wide angle for less than the 16-80 if you are wanting to add a wider view.

I use that same 24-85 on my d850 when i need the convenience of a zoom. My copy works extremely well. There are lots of reasons why photos ars not sharp. One of which is that a lens is not performing well. Try a series of shots in controlled setting, using a tripod, careful technique and manual focus, including live view. It may be that autofocus calibration is the culprit and that only a change in lenses (or a repair) is the answer.

bobburk3, have you contacted Nikon? I do not have the 16-85 but I use the 24-85 often and I am very pleased with it. The 24-85 was made for use with a FX camera (full frame) while the 16-85 was specifically made for use with the DX format. For your D7200 the 16-85 will give you a better wide angle if that is important to you. The 24-85 can be used with a DX camera but while you gain on the tele side you lose wide angle capabilities.

The 16-80 f/2.8-4 is a good deal better. Sure it is expensive but you can find a fair amount of used ones floating around as it was used as a kit lens on the D500 OA

Viva the Nikon 16-85. One of the first lens I bought when I settled in with Nikon (pre2010?). Still working well but I like it so much I bought a second for back up. Sharp enough, but I was not aware it could be calibrated on these old cameras (D7100, D7200).

The 16-85 glass is quite good. I was very satisfied with mine. However, I gave it away attached to a crop sensor camera. You"ll like it.
