This year I took greater care this year when opening a Thistle hoping to keep all of the seeds contained ,It's akin to shaving a balloon without popping it.
I have found over the years it is easier to control The Thistle by harvesting all of the pods before they mature instead of chopping the whole plant out of the ground.
For all its beauty this thing is out to get you !!The only part that don't have spines is the top of the flower.
When I first move out here the thistle was all over the place, having fought it by chopping it in the 1970s I decided to just cut the pods off , now almost five years later I have only found two plants on the whole seven acres.
The images below just show a little of the beauty and beast.
Each of these little strands is a seed.

Beautifully done, Frank. Great job dissecting the bloom, looks like a page from a botany textbook. Of course, the studio shot bud couldn’t be any sharper.
Nice photo. Them thorns are nasty!
Nice shots, Frank.
Thistles= farmer' nemesis.
Very nice photos, Frank! Bees love them, but I don't know why. I've looked closely, they don't seem to produce much nectar. Maybe they like the pollen?
Nice shots. Love your balloon shaving analogy.
