How are to know where to find categories other than the general post categories?

Perhaps you need to have a list of the alternative locations and list of the other forum categories placed at the top of the general category.

You might even just have an intro façade where the general category is among all the options. After all, the forum has categories separate from the main forum, so why make it hard to locate the forum categories beyond the general category?

1, Go to the bottom of this page, any UHH page.

2, Click "All Sections".

3, Read / Visit the various subsections and actively click the <Subscribe> button.

4, Use your <Newest Topics> button to access a view of new entries into your subscribed sections.

DirtFarmer Loc: Escaped from the NYC area, back to MA

The home page https://uglyhedgehog.com shows all the sections you are subscribed to. At the bottom of the list is 'all sections', which shows you all the available sections. If you see something interesting, clicking on it will show you that section and offer you the opportunity to subscribe to it. After that it will show up on the home page when you're logged in. There are a couple sections that show up by default when you sign up, but you are free to unsubscribe at any time.

In the new-look digest, the sections are still listed for each topic (they are below the topic title). Here's info from Admin:

When I log in to UHH on my computer, I see a "home" button in upper left corner that contains the sections to which I'm subscribed. If your layout shows "digest" there, consider other ways to browse, such as already suggested by Chg-Canon and DirtFarmer.

This is not correct (at least for people who participate in the forum). If someone is logged in, I was told to simply use the curser (pointer for guys like me) and click on 'my topics'. It takes you to all the available options.

Great, as usual I'm not seeing any of what you guys are describing. I will try rebooting my computer and open the hog in a new window.

That will not take you to all the available options. "My Topics" only takes you to the topics to which you are subscribed.

As Chg_Canon suggested, The "All Sections" link at the bottom of every page - in tiny print - will show you every topic, and permit you to subscribe or unsubscribe to each one, according to your interests.
After that, the "My Topics" link will take you to all of your sections of interest.

No. "My Topics" takes you to a list of topic you alone started -- you were the OP. Your subscribed topics are under "Newest Topics", as I originally described. "Watched Topics" are those where you've interacted (started combined with your replies combined with any you've watched).

I agree. It sucks and may be the end of looking at UUH for me . Don't see why the change was necessary.
