My spouse and I are going to Niagra Falls for 3 nights. Its my first time there and the second time for my spouse. I have read that to photograph the falls to use a wide angle lens but also a telephoto lens. I am planning on taking my Canon 6D2 with 24-105 lens and my Sigma 14-24 wide angle lens which is very bulky and heavy. Also I am planning on taking my panasonic lumix 24-400 FZ1000 camera and my hero 4 go pro camera for taking photos on the Hornblower Niagra Falls cruise, polarizer and some ND filters to get some night shots of the falls and the silky effect of the falls plus a tripod. I would like to know if the gear I am taking adequate or is there something that is not necessary to take like my 24-105 mm lens.? We are staying on the Canadian side and I would like to get some nice wide angle shots of Horseshoe falls and the American Falls. Would appreciate some suggestions on good locations to photograph the Falls. I read one good spot is Victoria Falls.

Good Luck!
The Maid Of The Mist is a lovely boat ride. What? Wait?
You’re going to be near water. Lots and lots of water.

What you need is a Ruggard Rain Cover. Play with it so you get the hang of using it.

I also forgot to mention to buy camera bag desiccant packs. Head over to B&H on line. They got it there!!!

On the Maid of the Mist you WILL GET WET.

Terrapin Point (Goat Island) and Prospect Point are good places.

Check the photo points on Google Maps satellite view.

24-105 mm will be good. You can walk along the Rainbow bridge and take some shots from the middle of the bridge.
If you are planning to take shots from the Canadian side, the 14 - 24 will be great. Anywhere along the road from slightly behind the Falls right up to parallel to the American Falls will be great with either of these lenses.
Continuing towards Whirlpool and a trip on the Aerocar will give you lots of opportunities to get great shots and panoramas.
Continue beyond there to get onto the trail which takes you down to the Whirlpool for fun shots and then go further (on the bus - get a day pass) and take the trail down to the river for more good shots.
If you take your passport, the American side gives you cool photos of the American and Bridal Falls. The park on the American side gives great images of the rapids.
Night photography from the Canadian side gives you images of the American and Horeshoe Falls illuminated by high-power LEDs.
Use the wide-angle on the boat, but be ready to keep wiping off the lens, since there is a lot of mist in the air.
Enjoy!

When I was in college, we went there; I got a good view of the Canadian Falls; I don’t remember the details {this was fifty years ago}; I had stood in a usual tourist spot, just a few feet from the verge.

The picture below was taken by my daughter (she is not an enthusiast) with an iphone 13 pro, which has a 12mp camera. She says she was riding in a glass elevator at the time and asked me to enhance and print. I did some adjustments in LrC and printed at 17" x 22" on a Canon pro-1000. I was amazed at the detail, even when looking at the print up close. I believe that your 6D2 with 14-24 f/2.8 will probably do the trick. Personally, I'd add a 50mm f/1.8 prime and a 70-200mm f/2.8. The polarizer is a great idea and it's always good to have a go pro or maybe your smartphone for video. Enjoy and please share some of your images when you get back.

Thanks for the info. We are from Canada so we will mostly be on the Canadian side but will go to the American side of the falls if time permits.

When I took my husband there, we went high into one of the towers. It affords a great view of the falls and you won't get wet. Save the wet for last in case you slip and drop a camera or cause damage to your gear. I had my Nikon 16-80mm lens and that was all I needed for the trip. With something like that you have the close up you need and the slight telephoto you want for the up high photo.

By the way, you will probably get wet on every angle you use if you are down on the street, on a promontory and definitely on a boat near the falls. Have fun. It's quite the sight.

I should probably mention that my wife and I visited Niagara Falls in 1981 ….. a week later my SLR stopped working, and the repairman said it had hopeless water damage.

That is a gorgeous photo; thanks for sharing. I hope I can do as well. I do appreciate the tips. I do have a 50 mm f1.4 prime lens but had not thought of taking it. Also, I do have a Canon 7D2 that I normally use with my 15-85 mm lens. It is one of my favourite lens; razor sharp. Only reason I am not bringing that camera and lens is because I favoured taking my 14-24 wide angle lens and I cant use it on the 7D2. No one mentioned about using my Panasonic FZ1000 24-400 and I thought I might be using that camera the most.

We always stay on the Canadian side in Embassy Suites, we usually stay on at least the 20th floor, and facing the falls, that way you can get the river well above the falls and the falls at sunrise, sunset, noon, and when the falls light up at night, the best way to view the falls in my opinion. And as you may already know, the exchange rate will be at least 25% if not 30% in your favor.
Now, on the Canadian side, they have a zip line, this would be great for you Go Pro mounted on your helmet or hat. Don't miss the floral clock and the Niagara Parkway, Niagara on the lake is a very neat town with lots of photo opportunities, the garden on the parkway is maintained by the collage of horticulture and is always a great stop any time of year, buttery fly conservatory at 2565 Niagara River Parkway is a must see, the Whirlpool Aero Car is another must see, the old power poles at the Niagara Power Station is great and at that point you can see the American Power Plant across the river.
If you have time their is a 3 lock viewing point on the Welland Canal that a camera would love.
Don't forget the two forts, sometimes in season the boys dress up in period customs, the Canadian Fort is close to Niagara on the Lake and makes a nice stop for a camera.
When we do our yearly visit I take my 24-105 which takes 99% of my shots, when I need wide I mount my 16-35 f4.
Again, we prefer the Canadian side because of the parkway.

We went there a couple of years ago, I'd take your widest lens, I was using my Sigma 17-70 on a T4i, could have used a wider lens, also some of the best angles are from the Canadian side but, the nicest walking around and viewing is from the New York side.

Funny, we were there on our honeymoon in 1956. I had a Lordomat C35, an interchangeable lens rangefinder camera, built in uncoupled meter, but at the time I could only afford the 50mm lens. I also had a cheap tripod, and lots of Kodachrome film. We came back with lots of wonderful slides, still in the carousels. My point, you don’t need much. And yes, I took pictures on the Maid of the Mist. I was just careful.
