Powerful Aurora - Thru Clouds

There was a forecast for a powerful Aurora Borealis this evening AND there was! However, most of it was behind cloud. I stuck it out hoping the cloud would clear... and it did, just as the Aurora display ended.

I've posted one image taken when the Aurora was at its brightest.

You can watch the Aurora/Cloud interaction video at:

The brightest point of the Aurora is about the midpoint of the video clip.

Enjoy!

Very cool. Is that an all sky camera? Dumb question. Or what lens?

An Opteka 6.5mm, f/3.5 fisheye. Very similar, if not the same, as the Samyang 8mm f/3.5.

I often use the lens if I suspect a full sky Aurora, such as the one in April:

My normal lens for Auroras is a 14mm Samyang.

From green to red: I took this photo in 1980 and got it published in Astronomy Magazine. The air had an odd aroma but not objectionable. 35mm SLR, 30 second exposure using 400 asa film. Mamiya 35 wide angle lens.
